National Evaluation of the Equally Safe at School programme in secondary schools.

ESAS is a whole school approach to address gender-based violence in secondary schools in Scotland. It helps schools build a positive culture in which staff and students work together to prevent GBV and feel more confident and skilled in responding to incidents and disclosures of sexual harassment/violence.

Provide Feedback on the SHINE MH Survey and Future Developments of this Tool

Pupil Focus Groups:

- SHINE is looking to come into a secondary school and share data from your mental health survey with 8 pupils in a focus group to gain their feedback.

- We will also discuss the potential of adding personal identifiers and consent for data linkage to the survey. We want to understand pupils concerns and create resources around this. This will contribute to future developments of this tool.

Parent and Teacher Focus Groups:

- We will be running online, evening focus groups with parents and teachers around the SHINE MH survey.

- We  want to hear parents and teachers views on adding personal identifiers and consent for data linkage to the survey and understand concerns around this.

Please contact: mary.wilson@glasgow.ac.uk if you are  these opportunities.

The Ambient Sleep Study

The Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow have joined forces, with the support of SHINE, to work with young people from the age of 8 to 18 years to help shape a study into sleep in young people, which will use new contactless sleep monitors to track sleep patterns across this age range. Dr Heather Whalley will be presenting this exciting new project and inviting participation at the SHINE National Network Conference on 16th May, 2023. We hope to see you there!

The Youth Loneliness Study and the Participative Democracy Certificate SCQF Level 5

The University of Edinburgh is currently working with a group of young advisors to help design a study around youth loneliness in the digital world, which will involve tracking loneliness through an app. The app will then be rolled out to 200 young people as part of a larger study, providing scientists a greater insight into mental health. The 200 young people will be recruited through Generation Scotland, the largest family health study in Scotland which can now include people aged 12 years and over to allow for research into adolescent health. Generation Scotland and SHINE previously worked together to create TeenCovidLife surveys to gather over 5500 young people’s views of their life during the pandemic. You can read the findings of this report here   TeenCovidLife: The results are in | The University of Edinburgh

The team is really keen to work with schools to ensure that they are fully representative and that the co-production process is beneficial for the young people involved and therefore the research will include other methods of recognition and accreditation for young people including the Participative Democracy Certificate which is an SCQF Level 5 qualification. Please get in touch if your school would be interested in finding out more about the Loneliness Study or Generation Scotland by email GenScot@ed.ac.uk or telephone 0131 651 8718.

All the best,
