We received news of several national awards for Wilkinson College student publications and faculty over the winter break (see details below). The month’s Career Corner highlights a student’s life-changing study abroad semester experience in Japan. Meanwhile, Wilkinson faculty and students successfully traveled to Britain, Italy, France, and Argentina with interterm travel classes. Calliope Art & Literary Magazine Awarded National Recognition The Fall 2021 Issue of Chapman University’s Calliope Art & Literary Magazine was recognized as "Superior," the second of four tiers, in the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest. Congratulations to Editor-in-Chief Tara Mann (‘22, Creative Writing), Managing Editor Kelly Taylor (‘24, Creative Writing, History), and the entire Editorial Board. Voces Novae Winning Streak Continues Voces Novae: Chapman University Historical Review, a student-run history journal which showcases the capstone papers of Wilkinson College History majors, has won third place in the Nash Award for best history student-run journal in the nation. This year’s award is especially impressive, since the journal was judged in the graduate-level category, and competed with journals run by MA students at other institutions across the country. Wilkinson College Welcomes New Graphic Design Faculty The Voice of Wilkinson sat down with new faculty member Dr. Maliheh Ghajargar and asked her why she chose Wilkinson College and what it means to be a part of the heart and soul of Chapman University. Keynote speaker Dr. Janice DeWhyte, Associate Professor of Religion at Loma Linda University, author of Wom(b)an: A Cultural-Narrative Reading of the Hebrew Bible Barrenness Narratives. Motherhood to Motherhoods Conference Wilkinson College is hosting a free, three-day conference, Motherhood to Motherhoods: Ideologies of ‘The Feminine’ in April 2023. Dr. Julye Bidmead (Religious Studies) and Dr. Stephanie Takaragawa (Sociology) received a 2022-23 On-Campus Conference Award to organize the conference, which will investigate the construction of “motherhood” as a concept and connect community members to holistic resources. Career Corner: How Studying Abroad in Japan Helped Me Find My New Career Path Carolyn Holt (’24, Creative Writing, Law and Liberal Arts minor) discusses her study-abroad experience at Temple University in Tokyo, and how the short time she lived in Japan showed her the life and career she wants after Chapman. Recognition for Dr. Justin Walsh’s Pioneering Space Archaeology Project Wilkinson College congratulates Dr. Justin St. P. Walsh (Department of Art) and Dr. Alice Gorman (Department of Archaeology at Flinders University in Australia), who were recently presented with the Archaeological Institute of America’s 2023 Award for Outstanding Work in Digital Archaeology for their work on the International Space Station Archaeological Project (ISSAP). Upcoming Events Tuesday, February 7 & 21 at 12 p.m. Wilkinson College's Africana Studies program will partner with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Chapman's Sisters Circle to host this discussion on the critical contributions made toward feminist movements by Black women. Thursday, February 9 at 4:30 p.m. Join co-sponsors MA in War, Diplomacy, and Society and UCI's The Forum for the Academy and the Public for a book talk with journalist and author, Jonathan Katz, in Argyros Forum 209AB. Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America’s Empire uncovers the forgotten history of the rise of the U.S. global empire in the early 20th Century. Tuesday, February 21 at 2:30 p.m. Join us for a "Day of Remembrance” for the Japanese American incarceration in Argyros Forum 209BC, featuring a screening of the documentary film We Said No! No! A discussion with Director Brian Maeda and film funder Robert Lemelson of the Robert Lemelson Foundation will follow the screening. Tuesday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. Save the date! Join Wilkinson College's Department of Peace Studies, The Office of the President, and the Delp-Wilkinson Lecture Series for "Bringing ISIS to Justice," a discussion with Nobel Laureate and Chapman Presidential Fellow Nadia Murad, at the Musco Center for the Arts. Murad’s book, The Last Girl, will be on sale before and after the event. A book signing will follow. 2023 Parent Spring Summit Friday and Saturday, February 10 and 11, join us for several events, including the annual State of the University Address, presented by Daniele C. Struppa, Chapman Celebrates, tours, and parent programming to connect you to campus, resources, and the Chapman Community. Saturday (February 11), join us for a conversation with the Dean of Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Jennifer D. Keene and Wilkinson Career Manager Erin Berthon to learn more about the undergraduate experience and career resources available within Wilkinson to prepare your student for life after Chapman.
