Happy Holidays to all of you!

Thank you to those of you who have already sent in your pledges and/or dues for this new year. If you are paying us monthly right now, either by writing and mailing a check to us, or by way of PayPal, we are looking into setting up automatic monthly payments from your checking account. If you would be interested in this, please let me know. (Membership@JCCOBend.com).

These past two years have been difficult to say the least. We look forward to the day when we can resume our frequent gatherings in person. We’re all getting tired of only meeting on Zoom. But, in spite of these challenging times, we have managed to add nine new member family units to our roster. We’ve been able to meet some of our newbies in person, but not all of you. Please consider joining us for the giant Menorah lighting event at 4:45 on Sunday, Dec. 5. Mingle with friends. Enjoy some food!

We are embarking on a new stage in growing the Central Oregon Jewish community, including developing a vision for the next 3 to 5 years. We will be reaching out to our membership to help us shape our community together. If we work together, we can accomplish great things.

From Bryce Adams:

Channukkah always feels special to me. There are bigger holidays; major ones that loom over the whole time they're around whatever you're doing, or one-offs like Purim where you either do something to observe them or not and then it's done, but Channukkah is a non-demanding holiday that sticks around. Just take half an hour or so in the evenings to stop, light some candles, and enjoy the moment. Then do that all week. No requirement for a party (though some folks do), or do go through the rest of the day in some sort of holiday-based mindset-- just a week with one moment of the day that everyone comes together either literally or metaphorically, and then they go off back into their own thing.

ATTENTION: Members with Computer or Technical Skills

We are in need of someone with a bit of time (not so much) and some technical talent to take on the job of our Web Manager. Member Anouk Tapper has been doing this job for us for 15 years and has a desire to pass this on to someone new. Our website is at www.JCCOBend.com (or .org) and Anouk uses the WordPress program. We do not have a lot of updates happening to the site. She is willing to train someone on the ins and outs. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Cynde at Membership@JCCOBend.com – Thank you.

On a fund-raising note, if you are a Fred Meyer shopper and have one of their rewards cards, you can link your account to their “Community Rewards” program. Just go to https://www.fredmeyer.com , sign in, go to My Account and scroll down to Community Rewards. You will be asked to provide a local organization’s name – just type in JCCO in the search and our name will come up. Select it and your purchases will result in quarterly checks to us! And, at no cost to you! At last check, we only have three of our members participating so please consider adding your name to the program if you shop there.

Thank you, Rabbi Yossi, for considering so many worthy causes and making contributions to them from the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund!

Thank you to Alice, and the entire Religious School Governance Committee for helping to organize our Hanukkah Event at Shalom Bayit this year.

Thank you to Mark and Carol for continuing to bring Torah Study richness, diversity and organization to those who are seeking to dive deeper into the wisdom of our people.

Thank you to the committee members working to improve our safety, facility, services and educational opportunities!

"So Tell Us More About Mincha"

Mincha (the ''cha'' is pronounced like in Chanukkah) is the "new" Shabbat afternoon service (offered daily in traditional synagogues; It is a shorter service that also includes a mere ''taste'' of the new week's Torah portion; the reading itself hardly exceeds 2-3 minutes. Communal discussion of the small portion of the Torah read will be offered right after the short Havdalah ceremony that will follow the Torah reading.

Our intent is to keep this dual service as a hybrid program after we go in-person on a date yet to be determined. The entire Mincha service plus the Havdalah ritual should be completed in an hour. It is another opportunity for members and friends of CSB/JCCO to make time for Torah in their life in addition to the morning services on Shabbat that have been fixed features on our communal calendar; the Mincha/Havdalah service is offered on a Shabbat when we  did not offer a morning service.

We hope that you will check it out and allow for this booster of Jewish spirituality, Torah learning and ceremony to equip you as we take on the imminent beginning of a new week.  It is also a wonderful opportunity to share thoughts and insights with community members-- Please join us on December 4th at 4 pm pst to learn and pray with Rabbi Yossi and friends.
