Throwback Thursday

Strathfield South c.1940

This c.1940 photo shows Liverpool Road at Strathfield South looking up the hill towards modern-day Centenary Drive. The lonely house on the right was called Staffordvilla and the surrounding land was leased to the Strathfield Golf Club. Today, the house would stand on the corner of Hedges Avenue, within Strathfield South High School’s grounds. On the far left was H. & E. Crossan’s Engineering factory on the corner of Cosgrove Road. Beyond was the Lion Garage, owned by Herbert Thomasson and the Lion Tile Co., once the second largest tile works in NSW. McDonald’s now stands on this site.
