Congratulations to all who were recognised at the National Education Excellence Awards last week! The role of DDD was highlighted in the Minister’s opening address, and shone even brighter when the three most improved districts were named – Pixley ka Seme, Frances Baard and Bohlabela districts – all of which have been active participants in DDD initiatives over the past few years. A special vote of confidence came from Bojanala Acting District Director, Dr Ntwape, who credited DDD Dashboard usage as a key contributor to this North West district winning the award for “Excellence in Primary School Learning Outcome Support”. |

NEED CLARITY ON D3? HERE IT IS … |
|
| |
| |
When it comes to identifying, managing and supporting schools that need it most, the D3 Circular is the "what" (essential guidelines) and the DDD Dashboard is the "how".
Understanding how all of this comes together is as easy as watching the video clips below, taken from the recent D3 knowledge-sharing event hosted on 27 August:
PART 1: Understanding D3. An introduction by Mr Lehlohonolo Ramokhoase, Director of Johannesburg West (top-performing district in the country for 2024); followed by a detailed explanation of the D3 Circular and amendments, by Ms Edith Smith, Deputy Director for School-level Planning and Implementation Support. Click to watch (60 min)
PART 2: The practicalities of applying D3. By Mr Trishen Maraj, Deputy Chief Education Specialist in the QA Directorate, Gauteng Department of Education. Click to watch (24 min)
PART 3 (break-away): Using DDD to support improvement at high schools. By Ms Monki Gabashane, DDD Subject Matter Expert. Click to watch (56 min)
PART 4: Recapping key points, and next steps. By Mr Trishen Maraj. Click to watch (15 min)

Please note that the break-away session for Primary Schools, presented by Principal Raphael Phiri, was not recorded, but will be repeated as a DDD webinar in the weeks ahead. Please keep an eye on this newsletter for details. |

IT’S NOT ABOUT NUMBERS: IT’S ABOUT PEOPLE |
| |
|
|
| |
Having started his journey as a Social Sciences and English teacher in 2000, Azwinndini Mabuda today plays a crucial role in supporting teachers and schools to strengthen curriculum delivery and learner achievement in Gauteng. What has transformed his work as a senior education specialist in recent years, however, is the power of data.
“At first, I didn’t really understand the value of the DDD Dashboard,” he admits. “But once I was trained, I realised that I cannot do justice to my work without it.” Using the dashboard, Mabuda identifies challenges before visiting schools, whether it’s a teacher struggling with a topic or learners progressing into a grade without adequate foundations. This foresight enables him to provide targeted support, allocate resources effectively, and work alongside teachers to craft meaningful interventions.
For him, data isn’t about numbers, it’s about people. It’s about helping a teacher rediscover their confidence, or guiding learners toward breakthroughs that once felt out of reach.
Beyond academics, Mabuda believes education also builds identity and purpose. By encouraging visits to notable sites like the Apartheid Museum, he helps learners to connect with South Africa’s rich heritage, reminding them that history isn’t only in textbooks, but alive all around them. |
