Help us meet our goal to raise $40,000 this winter to activate our Action Plan. Volunteering Update: Let’s Get Out and Scout!Keeping up with the physical changes that occur in the Fells is a daunting task! With over 100 miles of trails and more than 2,200 acres of space to monitor, the task of identifying issues, hazards, and maintenance needs is a constant challenge at the best of times! And limited staff and time (for both the Friends and DCR) means that we rely nearly completely on the efforts of our volunteers and Trail Adopters to accomplish these scouting duties. YouTube Update: “Introduction to the Friends of the Middlesex Fells Reservation”The latest addition to our YouTube offerings is “Introduction to the Friends of the Middlesex Fells Reservation.” This video discusses our mission, the value of the Fells, and gives a brief overview of our programs and offerings. Revisiting the Geology of the Fells– Self-Guided Hikes Now AvailableSince 2007, Prof. Jack Ridge has focused a large portion of his research on the geology of the Fells, and made much of his findings available for the public to view at his website, “The Geology of the Middlesex Fells.” Updates to November’s Guided HikesWe are pleased to announce the addition of three more guided nature hikes to our events calendar for November, including the debut of a new hike leader with the Friends of the Fells! Bruce Wenning is a horticulturist and invasive plant specialist, and has a background in entomology and plant diseases. This Sunday, you can join Bruce on his guided hike “Lets Talk About Invasives:” Found in the Fells: NovemberBryan Hamlin’s monthly nature guide: "In some years good fall colors can still be seen early in the month, but as November progresses the forest floor becomes carpeted with nature's discards; and if there hasn’t already been a frost, there soon will be." Become a Volunteer: Volunteers are essential to every aspect of what we do! We have a range of opportunities available year round for individuals of nearly any age, availability, and skills. By volunteering with us, you will help to preserve the history, ecology, and beauty of the Middlesex Fells for generations to come. Please feel free to contact us with any questions. Reminder: The Friends of the Fells Board of Directors holds a monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of each month. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing protocols, these meetings are now conducted virtually. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, December 14th. If you are interested in participating, please contact friends@fells.org for instructions on how to join us! Help Us Protect the Fells: Our plans for the future are bold. They must be, to meet the pressing needs of our beloved “people’s forest.” To activate our Action Plan, we need to grow our financial capacity and double our staff. We're excited to share that a generous donor will match each $1 you donate with a donation to the R.J. Weggel Fund for the Friends of the Fells. This match only lasts through December, so please help us maximize this matching gift by making a gift today. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
