PREDICT & PROMOTE: HOW TO GET YOUR LEARNERS A STEP CLOSER TO THE FINISH LINE

The first machine-learning based DDD report goes live on the dashboard next week, giving education officials an innovative way to rapidly identify which schools or learners are at risk of underperforming by the end of the year.

The new Term 4 Promotions Prediction Report is a way for quick-thinking officials to view potential performance through a clearer lens, and target support to individual learners who are most at risk of not being promoted. And because the report uses machine-learning techniques to analyse data patterns and performance of historical data, it is a far more accurate and specific way of predicting this likelihood.

This report is a gamechanger – particularly because the predictions provided are based on complex patterns within attendance and subject performance data (too complex for humans to easily identify). Having a more accurate view of learners (or schools) at risk, earlier in the year, gives officials more time to analyse root causes and provide more relevant and specific support, sooner.

HOW TO FIND & USE THIS REPORT: Log in to the DDD Dashboard, navigate to the Reports section and select “Promotions Prediction Report”. There are some important rules that govern how the report works, and how certain metrics are calculated, so be sure to access the help information provided. Also keep an eye out for upcoming webinars on the topic.

WALK THE TALK: WHEN DATA (AND PEOPLE) DELIVER

Deep insights change conversations – and everyone benefits! Shane Wright, Deputy Chief Education Specialist in the Gauteng Department of Education, is a firm believer in evidence-based decision-making, especially the insights that shape curriculum discussions in his area. But when it comes to DDD, he encourages everyone to “walk the talk” and make active use of the dashboard in their daily work.

“DDD’s Curriculum Overview page, for example, is a tool that any official can use to strengthen curriculum delivery in their province,” he explains. “You have an instant advantage when you’re armed with a comprehensive view of subject and grade performance. It helps you prepare school visit reports, guides strategic conversations with school management teams, and pinpoints curriculum gaps and focus areas.

“The dashboard’s School Achievement Report is another key resource. It offers detailed insight into learner progression and promotion trends across subjects.” In this way, DDD plays a critical role in Wright’s curriculum planning, support and monitoring. With access to real-time data, he is able to engage in meaningful, evidence-based discussions with districts and schools, ensuring that support is timely and targeted.

As Wright and his team demonstrate, when data is visible, shared and talked about, you are only a step away from turning insight into action, and impact. So, what’s your next step going to be?
