Junior School NoticesTerm 2 Week 6Dear valued member of the PLC community, National Simultaneous StorytimeLast week, many of our Junior School students enjoyed listening to The Speedy Sloth from award-winning creators Rebecca Young and Heath McKenzie - the National Simultaneous Storytime book for 2023. The Speedy Sloth celebrates all winners, especially those who don’t come first. The students may borrow this book from the library and read to you at home. The Importance of Picture BooksPicture books and shared story time offer numerous benefits to children. They promote language and literacy development by exposing children to vocabulary and storytelling conventions. These activities stimulate cognitive abilities, imagination, and creativity, while also supporting emotional development and social skills through empathy and interaction. Picture books introduce children to various subjects, fostering knowledge acquisition and a love for reading. Additionally, they improve concentration and attention span, laying the foundation for academic success. We hope you enjoy some shared reading experiences over the long weekend. Year 2 Special GuestsAuthor Mrs Jane Gillon (grandmother of Annabelle Hood) came to visit Year 2T to share how she wrote her novel The Little Pearl Girl. She shared some great ideas on how to write exciting stories and gave the class some strategies to use in their own writing. Mr and Mrs Barrett (Ava’s parents) also came to share their skills as an architect and project manager. They showed them the process of creating a design brief as we begin our new Unit of Inquiry into How we Organise Ourselves. The class came up with some amazing ideas for their outside area. Wishing You all a Wonderful Mid-Term BreakTerm 2 is flying by, and we are already at the long weekend Mid-Term Break. On behalf of the Junior School staff, I wish all our families safe travels if you are going away, and I hope you all have an opportunity to slow down and spend time together. We will see everyone back in the Junior School on Tuesday 6 June. Kind regards, Geraldine Drabble
