NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER 2021

Hello friends,

Jokingly referred to as 'Australia's second highest-profile job after the nation's prime minister', the position of Australian Men's Cricket Team captain has experienced an incredible fall from grace.

The humiliation and resignation of 2 successive captains has sport-lovers asking questions of Cricket Australia's Board, particularly of the recent issue with Tim Paine.

Despite having doubts over his character and despite the potential release of the scandalous texts messages and images, the board chose to take the risk of keeping Tim Paine on as Captain.

So why the high-risk approach? What we were hoping for from Cricket Australia, after the 'sandpapergate' fiasco, was a role-modelling of leadership and a prioritising of respect in the pursuit of glory. What we're left with now is far from it.

In our latest installment of 'Sport at the crossroads', Patrick Skene asks "Could netball be the best sporting culture in Australia for maintaining respect for match officials?" We learn about the early exposure of netball players to the art (and difficulty) of umpiring matches that lead to a greater understanding and ultimately respect for officials.

Tales from the frontline tackling the abuse of officials
By Patrick Skene

"Netball is steeped in traditions and rituals and it was previously compulsory in many associations for teenage players to also volunteer their time as umpires of younger age groups. This broad umpire participation rule built an intergenerational platform of empathy and understanding in netball that is not hardwired in other sports."
