From the Acting General Manager's desk

2022 is shaping up to have exciting training opportunities, conferences and events. We have also welcomed four new team members: Peter; Laura B; Glenice; and Laura T.

A highlight so far has been working with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Steve Burke Horsepower Training Pty Ltd, to deliver the next round of livestock and low stress animal handling workshops.

We have also partnered with Department of Education to deliver the Certificate IV Training and Assessment through Scope Training, and Leadership WA to host their Signature Leadership Program opening retreat.

We're excited to host three more Animal Welfare in Emergency workshops at the end of March, in early April and in May. Read on to find out more about what courses are on offer at Muresk this year.

Muresk Institute Advisory Committee (MIAC) has already had its first meeting for the year, developing exciting plans for the year ahead.

Curtin University held their inaugural awards night on Saturday 5 February for students undertaking and completing the Associate Degree in Agribusiness at Muresk Institute. The event was held at River Room at WA Rowing Club and had a great turn out of students, proud parents and sponsors. Congratulations to all students and award recipients.

This year we will continue to work with our training partners and industry to offer a range of training opportunities, and raise the profile of agriculture and agrifoods as rewarding and valued careers.

Our focus will be to continue to safely deliver our services in compliance with COVID-19 protocols and in accordance with the WA health guidelines.

2021 recap: Inaugural WAFarmers Bootcamp to Employment hailed huge success!

As reported in the Countryman, the first ever WAFarmers Bootcamp to Employment (Bootcamp) has been hailed by ag industry members to be the “best and most exciting avenue” for attracting new recruits to the agricultural mechanisation industry.

Held over three jam-packed days, 18 keen youngsters took part in training led by ag industry experts covering topics like agricultural mechanisation, agronomy, machinery application and work health and safety.

McIntosh and Son Moora branch manager Cadeyn Catto was one industry leader involved in the ‘Meet and Greet’ session on the final day of Bootcamp.

"It was one of the most exciting opportunities I have ever been involved in from a resourcing point of view. The young people I spoke to had a real desire to be part of the industry.”

Keep an eye on our website for information on this year's Bootcamp program!

Bootcamp results in employment

Bootcamp participant Lachalan Thompson is one of the stand outs who has gained employment through the program.

Mr Catto said he was on the hunt for youngsters interested in precision agriculture and machinery. "The young people I spoke to had a real desire to be part of the industry. We can't teach desire but we can teach everything else."

Lachalan started his dual apprenticeship as a heavy duty diesel mechanic and auto electrician with McIntosh and Sons Moora in early September 2021.

Celebrating International Women's Day at Muresk

Muresk's Farm Technical Officer Laura Bryant grew up on her family farm in the Midwest and has always been passionate about agriculture. "Growing up on a farm is hard work but it is very rewarding and as a result I developed a strong work ethic early on."

Laura is a strong advocate for education and life in rural WA. "I have been interested in education for a long time – in primary school I had a really great teacher who inspired me to pursue teaching myself, I love that moment when a student gets it! However, being in a boarding school in Perth made me realise how unaware or disconnected life in the city is from agriculture and our food supply."

"The shortage in workers in the ag industry has become very clear in recent times and I’m excited to be a part of the solution here at Muresk. Working on a farm is such rewarding work, everything you do contributes to feeding our population.  It can be intimidating to move away from the city’s conveniences, but rural communities are so supportive and welcoming and I encourage anyone who thinks they might be interested in agriculture to pursue it."

Laura is a stand out addition to our team at Muresk!
