Tutor Newsletter February 2024

Spring season

Spring has arrived, and we're looking forward to the blossoming of creativity at Spring School, starting next week! Preparations are well underway and we look forward to welcoming students on campus.

We are also thrilled to share with you the exciting news about our newest offering, Graded Awards in Drawing. Spring School offers the perfect opportunity to introduce students to these new accessible exams, where they can have their drawing work assessed and graded by our experts.

Read on to discover more about Graded Awards, marketing team updates, and exciting upcoming events to share with your students and networks.

Graded Awards in Drawing are here!

Graded Awards are a new set of UAL Short Courses certifications now available for Drawing. The awards are assessed by subject specialists at UAL Short Courses and are designed to give recognition to your drawing skills without the pressure of traditional graded exams.

Are you teaching an under 18s course this spring/summer? Inside your tutor pack there will be flyers for this new programme. If you are teaching a drawing or illustration course we will also be including the flyers in your tutor pack.

Please make sure you distribute them to all students in the class at the end of the day on the first session and please give them an overview of what Graded Awards are. You may also want to show students our Graded Awards video.

How it works:
There are 6 grades that form the complete Graded Award in Drawing:
1.    Copying (grade 1)
2.    Line (grade 2)
3.    Tone (grade 3)
4.    Colour (grade 4)
5.    Composition (grade 5)
6.    Expression and meaning (grade 6)

Each ‘paper’ contains a task which tests a key skill in drawing. Students need to follow the instructions and submit their work online. It is then assessed and graded by subject specialists at UAL Short Courses.

On completion of each award, students will receive a digital badge and certificate stating their Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. If they complete all the grades, they will be awarded an additional certificate and digital badge for the overall Graded Award in Drawing.

Find out more about Graded Awards here or chat to your short courses manager/coordinator for more information.

Content gathering during Spring School

Image: A variety of paintings on a wall

We're looking forward to another incredible few weeks of Spring School and cannot wait to see what brilliant work your students produce!

As you know we love to capture and document as much as we can during these moments on campus, so please do look out for content gatherers coming into class from the UALSC marketing team.

We will do our best to ensure minimal disruption to class but we will kindly ask for your cooperation when collecting consent forms from students. We will provide an example form in your tutor packs to reference when inducting students.

Do you have a presentation or display planned that would make for great content, or a student who is keen to speak on camera?

Please reach out to Mimi m.jones@arts.ac.uk to arrange a visit from the marketing team.

Tutor Hub

A new page of teaching resources has been added to the tutor hub, including a set of induction slides that can be used with any course to support effective induction.

As ever, please do send suggestions for new content for the tutor hub to a.marlensummers@arts.ac.uk or your coordinator.
