Cr Benjamin Cai, Mayor of Strathfield Recognising the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong At this year’s Battle of Kapyong Memorial Service at Ismay Reserve, Council and the Cumberland RSL Sub-branch will commemorate the 75th anniversary of this significant moment in Australian military history and you are invited to pay your respects. The battle (23–25 April 1951), fought in the Kapyong Valley, located near the town of Gapyeong (Strathfield Council’s sister city), was a significant chapter of Australia’s involvement in the Korean War. Thirty‑two Australian soldiers lost their lives during the battle. The 75th anniversary honours a pivotal victory by Australian and Canadian battalions, supported by a New Zealand artillery regiment. Together, they halted a major enemy advance, helping to save Seoul and prevent a potential allied disaster. Battle of Kapyong Memorial Service One month to go until Homebush Vibes hits Rochester St! 🎉 Homebush Village will be centre stage with live music, vibrant cultural performances, and free activities for kids — plus a mouth‑watering mix of cuisines from local businesses. THROWBACK THURSDAY Sergeant Richard George Gazzard (402115) As Anzac Day approaches we remember RAAF pilot, Sergeant Richard (Dick) Gazzard (402115), of 19 Cotswold Road Strathfield, pictured far right. Gazzard served with Spitfire Squadron 452, the first Australian squadron formed. He went missing on 19 August 1941 during an operation over France, just two days after his 21st birthday. Flight-Lieutenant Paddy Finucane (4th from left) wrote to Richard’s father, Norman describing him as ‘the finest pilot in the squadron.’ His body washed ashore during October and he was buried at the Oostduinkerke Communal Cemetery, Belgium. Ten of these 16 men were killed during the war. Lest We Forget. Image: Pilots of No. 452 (Spitfire) Squadron RAAF at RAF Station Kirton-in-Lindsey, UK, June 1941.
