WHO issues first-ever guidance to support countries in staying malaria-free

WHO has released its first global guidance on preventing the re-establishment of malaria ‒ a vital resource for countries that have succeeded in eliminating the disease or are approaching that goal. While relevant to all malaria-free countries, the guidance is targeted to those in tropical and subtropical zones ‒ where the risk of re-establishment is highest.

Suriname certified malaria-free by WHO 

 

In June, Suriname became the first country in the Amazon region to receive a malaria-free certification from WHO. This historic milestone follows nearly 70 years of commitment by the government and people of Suriname to eliminate the disease across its vast rainforests and diverse communities.

Call for experts for the Malaria Policy Advisory Group

WHO is seeking experts to serve as members on the Malaria Policy Advisory Group. This “call for experts” outlines the desired qualifications, how to express interest, and the selection process.

Clear, evidence-informed WHO recommendations are designed to guide countries as they develop national malaria strategic plans. All of the Organization’s most up-to-date recommendations on malaria are available through a web-based platform and a mobile app. The Global Malaria Programme also publishes a list of upcoming guidance on its website, updated quarterly.  

 
 
 

Malaria stakeholders unite to confront rising drug resistance in Africa

Meeting on the margins of the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly, health leaders from malaria-affected African countries and global partners called for stepped-up action to counter antimalarial drug resistance ‒ a growing challenge that threatens to undermine hard-won progress against one of Africa’s deadliest diseases.
