Remembrance DayLast Friday, we commemorated Remembrance Day with a moving whole school service organised by our Junior School students and staff. It was lovely to see the whole school come together to reflect on and remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts. We have a supply of RATS for collection from the Uniform Shop during opening hours. A Reminder of the Definition of Close Contact A close contact is a household or household-like contact, or intimate partner of a person with COVID-19 who has had contact with them during their infectious period. The infectious period for a person with COVID-19 is taken from 48 hours before onset of symptoms or 48 hours before the positive test result, if there are no symptoms. 2023 IGSSA Co-curricular Sport TrialsStudents currently in Years 6 – 11 (ie Years 7 – 12 2023) received information on how to register for the upcoming IGSSA Volleyball and IGSSA AFL trials. Further trials will be held in Term 1, allowing students new to PLC to be assessed. IGSSA Volleyball and AFL fixtures commence in Week 3 of Term 1 2023. Instrumental and Vocal Music Lessons 2023All instrumental and vocal music lessons will conclude on Friday 25 November. Congratulations to all students on their musical development and achievements throughout the year! Students who wish to continue with their instrumental or vocal tuition in 2023 do not need to re-enrol. Current enrolments will automatically roll over to next year. Parents are asked to notify the Music Department at music@plc.wa.edu.au by Friday 2 December if they do not wish to continue lessons in 2023 or need to change their current enrolment details. New music enrolment applications for 2023 are welcome by completing the below form. Holiday ProgrammeThe next PLC Holiday Programme will run Wednesday 18, Thursday 19, and Friday 20 January from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm at $50 per day. Some excellent community partnerships will deliver the sessions including Fremantle Football Club and Perth Scorchers (with current players), K2 Dance, Netball WA, Aspire Tennis, Mark Lee Football Club, Hockey (current Olympian), and MBA Sports. Each day is unique, with students covering four different sports sessions each day. This is open to female students from Pre-Primary to Year 7 from any school, so book now to secure your spot! And don't forget to tell your friends. PLC Parent RepresentativesThe PLC Parents Committee are looking for keen and engaged volunteers to take on Parent Representative roles in both the Junior and Senior School. In these roles, you would help as a communicator to families from your year group, liaise with parents, the PLC Parents Committee and the School, assist with year group events, and play a role in the PLC Parents Committee decision-making. You might have a daughter/s or connection across this year group, and are enthusiastic to help foster an active and inclusive parent community! Performing Arts ShowcaseThe Performing Arts Showcase will focus on a selection of the work Years 7 to 10 students have created in their Dance and Drama classes this semester. These pieces have been created collaboratively under the supervision and training of their Dance and Drama teachers. They would love to share their work with you and hope you will add this date to your diary.
University Extension Programmes 2023PLC students in Years 10 – 12 who have demonstrated high academic ability are eligible for the Curtin University Rising Scholars Programme (RSP) and UWA Starter Programme. University extension allows students to experience university coursework before the demands of an IB Diploma or ATAR load in Year 11 or 12, or by providing younger students with a taste of different disciplines before entering upper school. Parents are invited to attend an information session on Monday 21 November from 5.00 pm - 6.00 pm online via this link. Christmas AppealTogether with the St Vincent de Paul Society, PLC is supporting 20 families that have endured trauma by making a contribution of gifts, helping them to celebrate this holiday season. The generous donations from our PLC Senior School community will help fill 20 boxes with wrapped presents that will be given to these families. You can help by buying, wrapping, and labelling a gift with the gender, family number, and age of the family member to be donated in the boxes located near the McNeil Street Reception for each House. Tabitha Roche (Year 11 CAS IB student) Give Write – IB CAS Service ProjectAs part of a student-led initiative between CAS IB students and the Junior School Service Leaders, we invite the PLC community to donate any new or recycled stationery no longer required, through the donation boxes located at View Street, McNeil Street, or Junior School Receptions until Thursday 8 December. Donations Your kind donations will be distributed through the charity group Give Write which collects donations of new and pre-loved stationery and recycles, repackages, and redistributes them to children in need so they have the tools to feel engaged and inspired to learn. Packing Afternoon In addition, Year 6 to 12 students are invited to assist with a stationery packing afternoon on Wednesday 30 November 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm in the PLC Lighthouse Community Room. Donated items will be sorted, cleaned, and packed by student participants and Service hours can be claimed for this activity. Student AchievementsBook in a Day WinnersYear 9 students Isla Mannolini, Rosie Greenaway, Kiara Stofberg, Emma Ryan, Livya Siford, Kaitlyn Sin, and Edith Hellings have won the national prize for The Kids’ Cancer Project’s Write a Book in a Day competition. They commenced writing at 8.00 am and completed an entire book titled ‘Thief in the Themepark’ with illustrations before the 9.00 pm deadline. They were announced as winning the WA Best Middle School Book before then also taking out the Middle School National Winner for Best Book on Wednesday 9 November via a Youtube announcement. Kaitlyn Sin said she loved the experience and enjoyed being an author, illustrator, and publisher for a day. “I’m so happy to know that the book we made will help spread joy to children around Australia. It was so much fun,” Kaitlyn said. Teams of up to 10 compete from across Australia to write and illustrate a book in under 12 hours that will be uploaded to an online library for children in hospitals around Australia. This year marked the 20th year of the competition and has raised over $792,423 for kids' cancer research. Strength in STEMGeorgia Kronja and Yvonne Cui (Year 11) have been selected for the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). The NYSF programme offers a range of in-person and digital science, technology, engineering, and mathematics experiences for participants across Australia. The programme also offers insight into the wide variety of engaging, rewarding, and inspiring study and career options available in STEM fields. Georgia will travel to Canberra to compete in the programme from Tuesday 10 to Tuesday 24 January 2023. Yvonne has also been selected to participate in the 55th National Mathematics Summer School (NMSS) programme, also taking place in January 2023. Each year, approximately 75 students from around Australia are selected to participate in the NMSS, a programme for the discovery and development of mathematically gifted and talented students. Yvonne has chosen to travel to Canberra to participate in the NMSS programme in January. Hannah Heading to NZ for FutsalHannah Reynolds (Year 9) has recently been selected in the U14 Australian Futsal team. She will travel to New Zealand from Wednesday 30 November to Monday 12 December to play in an international tournament. In addition, she has been selected for both U15, U16, and Youth Women’s WA Futsal teams travelling to Sydney in January for National championships. Congratulations, Hannah!
