Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair As a proud Triton alumna, I’m excited to announce that for the fall 2021 quarter, UC San Diego admitted a record 40,616 first-year and 12,330 transfer undergraduate students out of more than 140,000 applications — the second-most in the nation. Among University of California campuses, UC San Diego admitted the most transfer students from California, of which 5,400 come from a low-income household and more than 3,000 are from an underrepresented group. More than one-third of first-year students and over half of transfer students admitted this year will be the first in their family to attend university. UC San Diego is also committed to serving our cross-border community. This year, we increased the number of admitted students who identify as Latinx by 23.2 percent, an important step toward becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution. As a public institution, UC San Diego is making good on its promise to provide access to education, and your support as a Chancellor’s Associate is a significant part of that. The diversity of our incoming students continues to expand, and I’m grateful that you’re helping these aspiring learners achieve their academic dreams. With Triton pride, Jerrilyn Malana ’86 Service, Pride & Inclusion Chancellor’s Associates Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Challenge Continues If you’ve graduated from UC San Diego within the last ten years, you are eligible to participate in the Chancellor’s Associates Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Challenge. CASP Gold Donor Profile: Chancellor’s Associates Scholar alumna Nirvana Navarro ’17 is the first graduate of the last decade to take part in our Chancellor’s Associates GOLD Challenge. Nirvana is a Triton through and through: After receiving her bachelor’s degree in international business, she joined UC San Diego as a financial assistant in what was then known as the Student Retention and Success Business Office. Since then, Nirvana’s career has grown — she received a promotion and is now a financial analyst for student retention and success within the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Resource Management team, which includes CASP. She is passionate about improving the world through her deep devotion to numbers, as well as financial management and policies. Nirvana will expand on her passion this fall, starting her master’s degree in accounting at San Diego State University. As a transfer student from Imperial Valley College, Nirvana says that receiving the Chancellor's Associates Scholarship changed her life's trajectory forever. “Receiving the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship solidified my decision to say yes to UC San Diego. Although the financial support encouraged me to choose UC San Diego, it was the people in the scholarship program that guided me through my undergraduate journey. If it wasn't for the great mentorship of Academic Support Coordinator Karen Van Ness, I wouldn't have made it to the graduation line. In fact, once upon a time, I was ready to withdraw because I didn't think I belonged. However, under Karen's patient guidance through the journey with the unknown and unwritten rules of academia, I was able to find my true north.” Says Nirvana, “I want to be able to contribute back to the community that allowed me to pursue my degree, supported my dreams, and always encouraged me to continue dreaming even bigger. Participating in the Chancellor's Associates GOLD Challenge, is my way of saying ‘Thank you.’ I hope one day a young alumnus out there will be inspired to do the same.” After a year of streaming offerings and digital residencies, it will be amazing to return to live performances with ArtPower’s 2021-22 season. With 22 performances planned for the upcoming season — including chamber music, dance, global music, jazz and American Routes performances, as well as an exclusive concert by La Santa Cecilia cohosted by UC San Diego’s Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion — ArtPower’s dynamic performing and media arts schedule deepens our community’s engagement with artists and art, awareness of our world, and understanding of others. Holocaust Living History Workshop: “Franci’s War” – with Helen Epstein In the summer of 1942, 22-year-old Franci Rabinek began a three-year journey that would take her from Terezin, the Nazis’ “model ghetto,” to the Czech family camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau, slave labor camps in Hamburg, and finally Bergen Belsen. Trained as a dress designer, Franci survived the war and would go on to establish a fashion salon in New York. “Franci’s War” is her memoir of life in Nazi-occupied Europe. Rabinek’s daughter, Helen Epstein, a prolific journalist and author, will introduce and discuss the memoir during the event. Besides contributing to major dailies such as the New York Times and the Washington Post, Epstein has published several books, including her highly acclaimed Holocaust trilogy that begins with the volume “Children of the Holocaust.” Register for this free event here.
