Kaya reader,

With only six weeks to go until the WorkCover WA Conference 2025 - Amplifying Impact, we’re all sold out and the excitement is building!

Of course, amplifying impact isn’t just limited to one day.

We are committed to amplifying our use of data, measuring what matters, engaging with the latest research and ensuring the highest standards of regulatory practice.

Our reach to all Western Australian workers, employers and service providers, no matter their location, is amplified through proactive education and more regional and online engagement.

Read on for a closer look.

Focus

Banner - Data-driven regulation

WorkCover WA uses data received from the ATO and other government agencies to proactively educate employers about their legal obligations and identify potential breaches for investigation.

In the final quarter of 2024/25 alone, WorkCover WA compliance activities resulted in 180 new policies of workers compensation insurance being taken out, covering 1,444 workers.

More Quarterly Compliance Updates

It all comes down to the data.

Inaccurate data can divert valuable resources away from investigating real instances of non-compliance.

That’s why it is vital for all insurers to maintain accurate and up-to-date employer information – especially employer ABNs and contact information – and regularly report updates to WorkCover WA.

This will enable us to continue to work together to generate positive outcomes for the workers and employers in our state.

Self-insurer Capability Review

WorkCover WA has commenced a performance capability review of licensed self-insurers operating in the WA scheme. The process comprises of self-assessment, self-reflection and appraisal against key performance indicators

It is the first review under a renewed regulatory framework developed under the Workers Compensation and Injury Management Act 2023.

The new framework extends to all aspects of workers compensation and injury management with an emphasis on claims management.

Household policies

Under the 1981 Act, some insurers offered domestic workers compensation insurance coverage as an add-on to other policies.

There is now a requirement for household policies to be taken out as standalone policies and reported to WorkCover WA in the same way as any other workers compensation insurance policy.

We will soon be sending Legal Obligation Notices to former domestic policy holders to provide education about their legal obligations to maintain cover and take out a policy if they are continuing to engage household workers.

Reaching the Regions

General Manager Rebecca Harris travelled to Merredin to present at WorkSafe WA’s Farmers’ Forum: Safety in Agriculture on 18 July, alongside WorkSafe Commissioner Sally North and General Manager Andrew Ballam.

Ahead of National Farm Safety Week (20-26 July) it was a timely reminder of the critical importance of employers meeting their legal obligations, workplace safety standards, and the value of robust return to work practices.

The event was an excellent opportunity for WorkCover WA to connect directly with a unique cohort of regional stakeholders in one of WA’s most vital yet high-risk industries.

The visit also included engaging with local medical practitioners to distribute key resources to support GPs and patients.

Thank you to all our stakeholders who joined the event, both in person and online.
