The free session will cover practice and regulatory updates

Join the College's new CEO, Board members, and staff for a practical and interactive discussion on reserved practice and regulatory updates in British Columbia. Learn how evolving regulatory requirements may affect your professional work, gain clarity on practice boundaries, and ask questions directly of College leadership.

Whether you're a registrant, employer, student, or considering registration, you'll leave with a clearer understanding of what is changing and what it means for your career and practice.

The session will be held at the Coast Prince George Hotel. The agenda includes:

• 5pm: Networking reception, with complimentary appetizers and beverages
• 5:30pm: A 45-minute open information session (free and open to registrants and non-registrants) with the new CEO and College staff on reserved practice and regulatory updates
• 6:15 - 6:45pm: Networking reception

CPD Reminder

Remember to submit your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) report via the Registrant Portal before the December 31, 2026 deadline. You'll need to complete it to pay your 2027 registration dues. 

The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program requires registered applied biology professionals to maintain and improve their professional competencies by completing continuing professional development activities. The CPD Program aids the College of Applied Biologists in protecting the public interest by ensuring registrants continue to remain up to date as applied biology professionals. A practicing or in-training registrant is required to earn 100 qualifying CPD points over three consecutive CPD years from the date of registration. A CPD year runs from January 1st to December 31st of the same year.

APB – CAB Meet to Discuss Areas of Mutual Interest

The College and the Association of Professional Biologists (APB) leaders met in Victoria to discuss the roles of the two organizations and explore areas of mutual interest. The conversation covered topics such as continuing professional development, participation at AGMs and conferences to share information about their respective roles, support for early-career biology professionals and mentoring. The discussion was productive and there was agreement to continue dialogue and explore opportunities for collaboration where they align with each organization’s distinct role and mandate.

Improving habitat, reducing risks for fish, wildlife, ecosystems
From the Government of BC - The Province is investing $1 million in the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation to support a provincewide assessment of water infrastructure located in areas that support fish, wildlife and ecosystems. Information gathered will help guide investments that are expected to improve public safety, fish and wildlife habitat, community resilience

Rescinding temporary fish-protection order for Salmon River: Province working to balance fish protection with urgent public-safety needs
From the Government of BC - On August 10, the Province rescinded the temporary fish-protection order for the Salmon River watershed, as farmers and ranchers deal with elevated wildfire risk in the region.

Issuing a new temporary fish-protection order for Salmon River
From the Government of BC - As adult Chinook salmon return to the Salmon River to spawn, the Province is issuing a new temporary protection order to help ensure enough water remains in the river to support fish survival and spawning (August 19).

Governments of Canada, B.C. announce the British Columbia Fisheries Fund to support the fish and seafood sector
From the From the Government of BC - On August 20, Joanne Thompson, federal Minister of Fisheries, Randene Neill, B.C. Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship and Minister Responsible for Fisheries, and Lana Popham, B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Food, announced the British Columbia Fisheries Fund (BCFF), with a joint Canada-British Columbia investment of $106.5 million over five years.

From the Government of BC - Randene Neill, Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, has released the following statement acknowledging the annual meeting of the Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministers (CCFAM) in Victoria from Aug. 17-20, 2026.

B.C., First Nations Fisheries Council strengthen collaboration
From the Government of BC - Government has provided the First Nations Fisheries Council of British Columbia (FNFC) with $2 million to support work on joint priorities related to fish, water, aquatic ecosystems and coastal health over three years. Funding will help First Nations and the Province work together on fisheries and aquatic resource planning, sustaining healthy watersheds, supporting communities, recovering wild salmon, strengthening local economies and healthy coastal ecosystems for generations

Operation North Pacific Guard strengthens relations with Japan, monitors high seas fisheries during Pacific-wide patrol
From the Government of Canada - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has completed its annual patrol of the North Pacific Ocean to detect and deter illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activity and monitor fishing fleets active on the high seas.

Four shellfish harvesters fined a combined $18,000 for illegal fishing and obstruction in Deep Bay, British Columbia
From the Government of Canada - DFO enforcement action against four individuals involved in illegal shellfish harvesting in Deep Bay, British Columbia (B.C.), concluded on July 7, 2026, in Courtenay Provincial Court. Four individuals were convicted and fined a combined total of $18,000 for multiple violations of the Fisheries Act, the Fishery (General) Regulations, and the British Columbia Sport Fishing Regulations.

Canada launches new Expert Taskforce on Natural Capital Accounting and Nature Financing
From the Government of Canada - On Aug. 7, the Honourable Nathalie Provost, Secretary of State (Nature), and the Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature, announced the establishment of the Expert Taskforce on Natural Capital Accounting and Nature Financing. Bringing together experts in nature conservation, Indigenous-led conservation, finance, economics, business, and public policy, the Taskforce will provide independent advice to the Government of Canada on how to better measure, value, and account for nature in decision-making.

Government of Canada and Tŝilhqot’in National Government to advance construction of a new Pacific salmon hatchery for Fraser Chinook
From the Government of Canada - On Aug. 25, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries, in partnership with the Tŝilhqot’in National Government, announced the award of a contract valued at over $7.5M to Industra Construction, to formally initiate construction of a new Pacific salmon conservation hatchery in the upper Fraser River watershed.

Government of Canada and Lheidli T’enneh First Nation to build new Prince George hatchery for Fraser River Chinook
From the Government of Canada - On Aug. 25, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries, in partnership with Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, announced that the general construction contract has been awarded to IDL Projects Inc. to build the Upper Fraser River Salmon Conservation Hatchery. With a contract value of over $38 million, this investment is an important milestone in the effort to conserve and rebuild Fraser River Chinook salmon.
