Balancing Act: Can Precariously Perched Boulders Signal Long-Term Earthquake Risk?Long ago, melting glaciers dropped giant boulders onto surfaces in the New York City exurbs, and many seem to remain in their original, delicately balanced positions. Can they be used to judge the maximum sizes of past earthquakes? Heat Wave in Europe: Climate School Experts Available to CommentHundreds of people have lost their lives in Spain and Portugal due to a heat wave that is moving north and east. More Frequent European Heat Waves Linked to Changes in Jet StreamA new study shows that weather systems that normally cool part of the continent are being diverted northward. This is combined with overall warming to produce long-lived heat waves. Dinosaurs Took Over Amid Ice, Not Warmth, Says a New Study of Ancient Mass ExtinctionThere is new evidence that ancient high latitudes, to which early dinosaurs were largely relegated, regularly froze over, and that the creatures adapted—an apparent key to their later dominance. Undergraduate Research Assistant Opportunities for Fall 2022-Spring 2023Opportunities related to climate, sustainable development, and the environment are available with distinguished faculty and researchers. Next Gen Is The Community/Science Saturdays Next Gen has been on the move this summer, working in partnership with youth from the Haverstraw Center, Spring Valley’s Martin Luther King Center, and the NYC STEM group. They have hosted these groups in Piermont, and then together explored some of Rockland’s natural areas as they enhanced their science communication skills and considered solutions for important environmental issues. Science Saturdays will continue through Labor Day with plenty of science to explore. Marisa and her team host Saturday events from 11am-3pm with activities like Invasive Species Battleship game focusing on two of our troublesome invasive crabs; tracking some of our iconic fish with eDNA; and learning all about the American eel. Wondering what’s coming up?
After a summer break, Earth Institute LIVE K12 will resume in the fall, featuring live lectures and interactive activities with our scientists and experts for K-12 students, educators, and families! Check out our rich archive of past sessions. Our Earth Series will continue in the fall with new and exciting content, in person and on-line. Stay tuned!
