Gold CoastWeekly
Gold Coast Weekly | Issue #40 | Koalas on the road

Did you know that the coastline between Burleigh Point and Snapper Rocks was declared a World Surfing Reserve in 2015?

Issue 40: In this week's edition, we're sharing tips on how dog owners can help keep koalas safe this breeding season, inviting you to the biggest pest fishing event in South East Queensland, and connecting you with new park facilities to explore.

Attention all dog owners

Be an alert dog owner this koala breeding season

Did you know that most dog and koala incidences take place inside backyards? Sadly, last year 25 koalas suffered dog attacks in suburbs across the Gold Coast. Regardless of the size or temperament of your dog, when approached by an unfamiliar animal in their own backyard, a dog may naturally feel threatened and react in an unexpected manner. While dog bites may not be visible on a koala, even a minor bite can become infected and be fatal for a koala.

Here are some actions you can take to help prevent fatal injuries to koalas:

  • Safely contain your dogs, keeping them indoors at night or confined on a veranda or in a garage area. Alternatively, try smaller enclosures, runs or long tethers.
  • Be aware that koalas live in, or close to, many off-leash dog parks. Always keep your dog under effective control and on a leash unless in a designated off-leash area.
  • If you see a koala on the ground in an off-leash area, place your dog on a lead immediately and keep a safe distance until the koala climbs back up a tree.
  • Install koala-friendly backyard fencing that enables koalas to easily climb and exit a backyard.

If you see a koala that is in danger, injured or deceased – call Wildcare Australia on 07 5527 2444 immediately. For more information, visit our website.
