The SHINE team was delighted to host the 4th SHINE National Network Conference in person at the new Clarice Pears Building on Tues 16th May 2023. The theme was ‘From evidence to action: a whole-school approach to improving young people’s mental health and wellbeing’.

Around 90 teachers, researchers and education policy professionals attended to hear Professor Margaret Barry (Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion Research at the University of Galway) present on implementing effective interventions for promoting young people’s mental health and wellbeing in schools. From the SHINE team, Judith Mabelis launched the SHINE mental health survey national dataset, Mary Wilson provided a research perspective on using personal identifiers in health and wellbeing surveys for young people; while Dawn Haughton led an interactive session on teacher wellbeing in Scotland. Network members heard from schools and local authorities who have used the SHINE mental health survey, with case studies demonstrating how the survey data report has informed improvement planning and interventions in their settings. Delegates also had the opportunity to hear about the latest research on tackling gender-based violence, new methods to measure sleep in 8-18yrs and the social impact for young people of having, or not having, a behavioural diagnosis. The day was rounded off with an opportunity to hear about the academic evaluation by Cardiff University of the Winning Scotland Mindset intervention for primary schools, providing insight into the benefits of using evaluated interventions to support improvements in young people's mental health and wellbeing.

The presentation slides and associated resources have been uploaded to the SHINE members' area of the website, which is accessible via school and LA members' digital folders. An amended version of the pack can be accessed below.

SHINE Mental Health Survey Resource Package

The SHINE Mental Health Survey resource package has been uploaded to the SHINE members' area of the website, accessible via members' digital folders.

Since its launch in Sept 2020, the SHINE pupil online mental health survey has collected over 80,000 young people’s responses, providing a comprehensive dataset of young people’s mental health and wellbeing during and emerging from the COVID-19 era.  SHINE is launching the dataset findings from 2020-2022 to provide a national perspective. The national package includes the 2020-2022 primary and secondary reports, a poster explaining the key findings, additional reflective questions and a collection of school case studies to support the interpretation and implementation of mental health and wellbeing data in the schools setting.

Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) 2022 Scotland National Report

The Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) 2022 Scotland National Report will be launched on Wednesday 21st June 2023, 10am-12pm, at the COSLA Conference Centre, Haymarket, Edinburgh. Key findings from the 2022 HBSC Scotland survey will be presented along with recent trends in health and wellbeing among adolescents in Scotland. The event will also provide an opportunity to network with other relevant stakeholders in Scotland with an interest in child and adolescent health and to discuss current priorities for future policy, practice and research.

Those schools that took part in the HBSC 2022 survey will receive a copy of the National Report over the summer.

National Evaluation of the Equally Safe at School programme in secondary schools.

ESAS is a whole school approach to address gender-based violence in secondary schools in Scotland. It helps schools build a positive culture in which staff and students work together to prevent GBV and feel more confident and skilled in responding to incidents and disclosures of sexual harassment/violence.

The Ambient Sleep Study

The Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow have joined forces, with the support of SHINE, to work with young people from the age of 8 to 18 years to help shape a study into sleep in young people, which will use new contactless sleep monitors to track sleep patterns across this age range. The study team would like to work with a youth panel advisory group to advise the team. You can download the poster here to put on your school noticeboard or pass on to HWB pupil committees.
