Welcome to June
Hi folks,
What a busy month it has been across Division 12 and the City of Gold Coast!
One of the biggest milestones was the adoption of the City's 2026/27 Budget. If you follow me on social media - and I strongly encourage you to do so for accurate, timely and up-to-date information - you would have already seen my initial breakdown of the budget and what it means for our community.
In simple terms, there are three key takeaways. Firstly, no essential services have been impacted. Secondly, the rates increase for owner-occupiers remains at, or very close to, CPI. And thirdly, the popular 10% discount for residents who pay their rates early or on time has been retained.
There is much more detail behind this year's budget, including the projects and priorities I have been advocating for on behalf of our community. For a deeper dive into what we secured and where funding is being invested, be sure to check out my Facebook or Instagram.
There has also been significant progress on several important local projects. The project page for the Hedges Avenue Upgrade is now live. Works will be delivered in stages and include road improvements, traffic changes and underground service upgrades. Similarly, the Mermaid Beach North Oceanway webpage is now live, providing information on the planning and design of the missing Oceanway link between Ocean Street and Pratten Park. This important project will improve coastal access and support active travel along our beachfront.
I'm also pleased to report that repairs to the sewer main on Intrepid Drive, Mermaid Waters, have been completed and tankering operations have now ceased. Some minor operational works may continue around Markeri Street in the coming days.
Finally, I look forward to officially unveiling the new Beach Wheelchair Lockbox at Miami later this month. This is another step towards making our beaches more accessible for everyone in our community. Click here for more details about the celebration - I hope to see many of you there.

Division 12 Hero Awards – Nominations open!
I’m proud to launch the inaugural Division 12 Hero Awards, celebrating locals who go above and beyond for our community.
🌟Nominations are open across 4 categories:
Local Hero of the Year – Recognising people who make a difference and inspire us to build a better community.
Senior of the Year (65+ years) - honouring selfless service and dedication to our community.
Young Person of the Year (16–30 years) - recognising outstanding youth leadership and community spirit.
Sports Star of the Year - celebrating athletic achievement and sportsmanship.
I encourage you to nominate someone who deserves recognition. Nominees must either live in or make a meaningful contribution to Division 12 (Mermaid Beach, Mermaid Waters, Miami, Nobby Beach and Burleigh Waters).

Monday 22 June - Lockbox Celebration, Miami, 10am-11am. The City of Gold Coast is extending its Beach Access Program with a network of beach wheelchair lockboxes. Come celebrate the unveiling of the new beach wheelchair lockbox at Miami. Register online.
Saturday 27 June – Naturally Gold Coast Festival, Broadbeach Cultural Centre, 9am-2pm - A free, family friendly celebration of our region’s environment and rich biodiversity.
July - Go Gold Coast Month - Discover a month of movement, sport, fitness and fun across the Gold Coast.
1-19 July – Surface; Miami Street Art Festival - Street art, music, events and more.
Tuesday 7 July - Manapause Yoga, Don MacSween Park, every Tuesday 6am - Basic entry level yoga for men who feel out of sync with their minds, their body and their lives. No expectations, lectures, pressures or judgement. Just easy going yoga and breathing held in a glorious beachfront location.
Saturday 11 July - Surface Festival Paws, Paint and Play, Ernie Tebb Park, 10am-12pm - Community dog walk through the Miami Precinct, kids activities and more.
16 – 19 July - Rumble on the Beach including Street National Skateboarding Championships, Pizzey Park Skatepark.
Thursday 23 July - Gold Coast Council BNE32 6 Years to Go countdown. Join some of your favourite skateboarders in counting down to Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games at Pizzey Park Skate Park!
Thursday 23 July - Trek for Rec, Pizzey Park, 8am-3pm - Inclusive event where participants choose a 5 or 10km distance to walk, run or roll followed by a carnival of sport and recreational activities focusing on fun!

ArtWalk
A vibrant new ArtWalk mural has transformed the Bermuda Street underpass, connection between Varsity Lakes and Burleigh Waters.
Delivered through the City’s Community Safety Program, this urban artwork is designed to deter graffiti, encourage respect for shared spaces, and improve how safe and welcoming a space feels.
🎨Created by Australian artist George Rose - known for her bold colours and nature-inspired works - the mural, The Long Path Was All We Knew, reimagines the underpass as both a physical route and a metaphor for time and change, inviting reflection on shared journeys and the resilience of species and communities adapting to evolving landscapes.
Public art plays an important role in strengthening community pride, wellbeing and liveability while supporting our local economy.

Basketball, anyone? ⛹️⛹️♂️
The Ernie Tebb Basketball Court Renewal project is now complete and ready for you to use! A new half court has been constructed on the southern side of the park, featuring a basketball hoop at one end and a netball hoop at the other.
Relocating the court has created a more open, flexible space and improved connections to nearby amenities including the playground, picnic shelter and drinking fountain, making the area more inviting for families and park users of all ages.

Cycling and pedestrian improvements around Miami State School
The construction of a shared pathway along Splice Street, Launch Road and through Ozzie Keegan Park is now complete, making active travel to and from Miami State School safer and more convenient for everyone. 🚴🚶

Miami Precinct Community Reference Group
Miami residents and business owners are invited to apply to join a Community Reference Group for the Miami Precinct.
The Community Reference Group will ensure community voices from the local area are heard and will act as the conduit between the City and the community to shape Miami’s future.
It will allow for ongoing and transparent communications between the City and the community with meetings to discuss how to best deliver projects that will revitalise the precinct.
Key projects in this area include the Pizzey Park Masterplan and the Miami Arts Depot.🛹🎭
The Miami Precinct revitalisation is a once-in-a-generation City investment bringing together the creative industries, upgraded recreational infrastructure and essential community services.

Miami’s Redondo Park Reinstatement
Community feedback on the future of Redondo Park in Miami has helped shape the final concept for the park as it returns to public use following light rail construction.
Key insights from the consultation:
🫶 Respondents expect the project will have positive benefits for the community.
🎾 55% of people supported the reinstatement of a free to use tennis court.
🚶 Top intended uses for the park included walking, exercise, dog walking, using the tennis court, relaxing and socialising.

Your experience of accessibility in community places and spaces
The City is seeking feedback on access to our sport and aquatic centres, community centres and outdoor spaces to understand how we can make these places more accessible and inclusive for people with a disability.
The City is committed to making the Gold Coast more accessible and inclusive so everyone can use and participate in our sporting venues, aquatic centres, community centres, parks, sport parks, waterways and beaches. 🏊♂️🏖️🌲
This survey will help us to understand accessibility in these places, including what’s working well and where improvements are needed.

An update from our Waste and Recycling Centres
From 1 July 2026, a $5 gate fee will apply for residents when disposing general landfill waste at Gold Coast Waste and Recycling Centres. 🗑️
🌳The good news is, recycling and green organics will continue to be accepted free of charge.
This user-pays system aims to provide a fairer, more sustainable way to manage our landfill waste.
The Queensland Government charges a Waste Disposal Levy for every tonne of waste sent to landfill. Until now, the City of Gold Coast has covered this cost for residents, but the rising Levy charges and rising waste and landfill expenses mean this is no longer sustainable.
The $5 gate fee helps ensure that people who use additional landfill services at WRCs, contribute to the cost of managing them.
A reminder that cash is not accepted at our Waste and Recycling Centres. However, Tap and Pay options will be available.

PD Online has been replaced with Development.i – a more user-friendly tool used to search property and development information.
🏠Development.i provides access to past and current development applications, referral agency assessments, building and other application types and basic property information for the City of Gold Coast local government area so it is easy to:

✔️ Gather information to help prepare applications.
✔️ Make a submission or comment on an application.
