WHO Initiatives

In all circumstances, strong governance is essential for health systems performance. It ensures that the government's priorities, principles and values are reflected in how the health system operates and responds to needs. But during times of health emergency, strong governance is especially critical because there is a need to act quickly and efficiently to mobilize all resources, both public and private, and to ensure alignment of the activities of all health system actors with national response efforts.

On Tuesday 7th December the Country Connector on the Private Sector in Health has been officially launched. It will work as an initiative led by WHO to provide a platform to support countries to engage with the private sector toward achieving public health goals including universal health coverage, health security and health systems resilience. During the launch, after a short introduction to the Country Connector and its activities, policy makers, private sector representatives and leaders have shared their thoughts and experiences on engaging the private sector in health. During the second part of the event participants engaged in a rich conversation with members of the panel asking their questions about the Country Connector. The recording of the event can be found here.

The JLN collaborates with the USAID-funded Local Health System Sustainability Project (LHSS) to host the Patient Pathways During Pandemics: COVID-19 and Beyond learning exchange.

This learning exchange brings together practitioners to share innovations, lessons, and resources used by health systems to achieve shifts in patient flows to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. Divided into two workstreams - one for COVID-19 and one for maintaining essential health services - participants shared their country experiences alongside nine discussion case studies.
Following these discussions, participants co-constructed an e-Library of shared resources on patient pathways, flows, and triage. The work of this group is now continuing in the form of a Community of Practice focused on scaling up e-consultations for virtual care. Learn more about the work of this learning exchange here.

As this is the last issue of the HLH Newsletter for 2021, we would like to thank you for your support and engagement. The HLH Team is wishing you a restful break and happy beginning of 2022!
