Dear Students,

We write to provide important updates and reminders on the policies and expectations regarding motorized scooters on campus, particularly as they relate to the safety of our campus community. Given the increased use on campus, we are also implementing additional requirements related to scooter operation and storage.

This communication explains the new registration process for motorized scooters and a reminder of the University’s existing Motorized Scooters Policy.

New Required Registration Process

Effective Tuesday, October 11th, all motorized scooters and motorized skateboards are required to be registered by BCPD.

Registration events will be taking place in the following three locations:

  • Upper Campus: O’Connell House on Tuesday October 4th, 9:00 am-12:00 pm

  • Newton Campus: Hardey Cushing Circle on Wednesday October 5th, 6:00-8:00 pm

  • Lower Campus: BCPD Headquarters on Thursday October 6th, 11:00 am-1:00 pmWe strongly encourage students with scooters to attend one of the three events to register their scooters.  Students may also register at BCPD in Maloney Hall.  There is no cost to register a scooter.

Policy Reminders

All students are required to comply with the Motorized Scooters Policy.  Within this policy, we wish to draw your attention to several of the following specific requirements:

  • Speed Limit: Those riding scooters must obey the speed limit of 15 MPH on surface roadways and 10 MPH in parking lots and garages.

  • Sidewalks: Motorized scooters may not be ridden on any sidewalks, including the sidewalk between Vanderslice Hall and Campanella Way.

  • Direction: Students must follow the designated direction on one-way roads, including Campanella Way, and adhere to directives on signage.

  • Safety: Scooters must be operated in a safe manner, which includes yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks, wearing helmets, obeying all traffic laws and regulations, and other requirements listed in the policy.

  • Storage: Students may not store scooters in buildings on campus and should instead secure them to a bike rack.  Scooters may never block a doorway, hallway, or point of egress.  Students who live in the residence halls may store scooters in their residence hall rooms, provided that they are not riding scooters inside at any time.  Students must carry their scooters while in any residence hall.  Motorized scooters are not permitted inside of any non-residential buildings on campus.  Any scooter that is not stored in a student’s residence hall room or secured to a bike rack may be confiscated.  Scooters may not be secured to benches.

Students are responsible for their scooters at all times. Students who do not adhere to these policy expectations may be referred to the student conduct process. Egregious and/or repeated violations of the policy may result in a revocation of scooter privileges.
