No. 25, November 2020

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Mia Lang for her immeasurable dedication and hard work over the past year as Co-Vice Dean, Education for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Many of you may know that Dr. Lang completed her term as Co-Vice Dean, Education as of November 6, 2020. Her work over the past year as I fulfilled my role with the College of Family Physicians of Canada was absolutely crucial, and I cannot begin to thank her enough for her support during this unprecedented time.

Neither of us predicted such an extraordinary year, with incredible challenges including organizational and institutional changes, budget cuts, and government decisions, all on top of a global pandemic. She took on this role without knowing the full scope of what this year would bring, and maintained a calm and reassuring presence throughout.

In addition to regular meetings with the education portfolio leads and providing regular reports to the Dean's Executive Committee, Faculty Council, and Faculty Learning Committee, she implemented and stewarded significant changes for the FoMD including leadership changes and implementing new processes to facilitate our pandemic response as well as leading important strategic discussions and conversations.

While she has now returned to her role as associate dean, faculty development, I am so grateful for the opportunity to have worked so closely with Dr. Lang during this time. Please join me in recognizing Dr. Lang's significant work.

Shirley Schipper
Vice-Dean, Education

From Edmonton to Karachi: teaching tools go the distance

Two new classes of first-year dental hygiene students will be using a series of videos developed by the School of Dentistry’s Sally Lockwood, Associate Clinical Professor in Dental Hygiene. Most interesting is that one of these classes is in Karachi, Pakistan! Lockwood created the videos to support teaching in the periodontal instrumentation skills lab. She says there wasn't a resource that met her course needs exactly, so she made 27 videos demonstrating technique for her students to watch at any time. More

Competence by Design (CBD)

A reminder to faculty and residents from our PGME CBD team to encourage you to record EPA observation feedback even if residents are still early in learning a skill or practice activity.  Residents need to show that they are making progress over time even if it is along the beginning parts of the entrustment scale.  They will not be penalized for having entrustment ratings like "I had to do, I had to talk them through, I had to prompt, etc." included in their portfolios; in fact this is encouraged to use the full scale as these represent valuable feedback opportunities to help them improve!  So long as residents eventually show competence in their required skills, their progress will not be hindered by inclusion of observations at earlier stages of development.

New coaching feedback resource:  As a teacher and coach, do you think residents find your feedback helpful? Quality feedback has a significant impact on learner development.  Can you spare 10 minutes to hone your skills? Try this new Royal College online coaching feedback module "RX-OCR" here. BONUS: Earn Section 3 MOC credits for each of the five activities!
