Club Respect - Pass it on

THE STATE OF PLAY | NEWSLETTER # 30

Hello friends,

Once again, the Olympics produced beautiful moments of respect, in the most extraordinary way. I suppose that's the power of 'The Games' - that it has the platform and the will to show the best in people.

Competitors, opposing teams, die-hard fans, families, heaps of Aussies, Hip-hop legends, and even DJ's all played a part this year!

We've now released all 30 of the top moments of respect at the Paris Games. It's hard to select a favourite, so here are a few that hit home for me:

1. Jemima Montag – Female role model: Her philosophy of “wanting it, not needing it,” and not linking her self-worth to the outcome, goes beyond athletics and can be applied in any aspect of life.

4. ‘Delly’ – Leadership masterclass: Shows leadership and respect for the game as he moves his teammates away from a physical confrontation.

17. Harry Garside – respect in defeat: Self-awareness and vulnerability. Being able to share this with the world and inspire others at the same. Amazing.

20. Respect for the Brazilian Queen: Celebrating your competitors Gold Medal on the podium with an iconic bow! Legendary.

22. The power of family and sibling love: Saya Sakakibara and her brother Kai, an unbelievable Australian story. Saya's Gold medal couldn't be sweeter.

 25. “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one”: The power of music to change the mood! Perhaps DJ's should be commissioned at every heated football and basketball match to regulate emotions!?

It's a great read, thank you to Patrick Skene for compilation. Enjoy!

    GUEST SPEAKING

    CEO & Chair Forum 2024 | VicSport

Club Respect spoke on the Panel – Healthy Sport panel at the VicSport forum.

    We spoke about:

    • the state of community sports clubs, particularly around match official disrespect and the growing support (by government and Australian Sports Commission) available for National and State sports bodies.
    • From our work with committees we know that clubs struggle to determine who's ultimately accountable for bad behaviour at their clubs.
    • Some case studies of clubs that have taken proactive approach to building their club culture and working towards respect.

Big thanks to Lisa Hasker and the team at VicSport for inviting us.

    CLUB RESPECT WORKSHOPS

Great turn-out for first year of Club Respect workshops with Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) clubs

Thanks to the YJFL and Spicers Australia we've delivered workshops to the club committees at 4 YJFL clubs this year:

    1. Parade St Damians JFC
    2. Northcote JFC
    3. Kew Rovers JFC
    4. Whitehorse Colts JFC

Some questionnaire feedback of the workshop 'highlights' include:

    • Loved the clear cut overview. Prompted a bunch of 'food for thought' around handling a 'tricky' situation coming up.
    • The booklet! - The opportunity to reflect on our club was great
    • Open discussion about the importance of club values and how they should be integrated throughout club.
    • Content is really engaging and presentation enthusiastic which great for engagement.
    • Excellent booklet and method of running through it, adaptive to timeframes.
