INSPIRE & EMPOWER: WOMEN CHANGING THE WORLD |
Throughout history women have been changing the world of science and technology. Let their words be your inspiration …
"Looking back, we were the luckiest people in the world. There was no choice but to be pioneers; no time to be beginners.” Margaret Hamilton is best known as one of the first computer software programmers. She coined the term "software engineering" and developed many of the best practises that shaped this field. While working at NASA in the 1960s, her team created the guidance software that put the Apollo spacecraft on the moon for the first time.
“I believe women should embrace STEM careers as thrilling adventures ... The greater our presence in STEM, the more empowering it becomes for future generations of women.” Khensani Xivuri is the first black female recipient of a PhD in Applied Data Science from the University of Johannesburg. Her research focused on building a model to identify and mitigate social and gender bias in the artificial intelligence tools typically used to determine things like credit scores, or whether someone qualifies for a loan.
“The allure of the unknown is far more powerful than the comfort of the known ... Embrace the unknown, for it is where discoveries lie in wait and dreams take flight.” Adriana Marais is a South African physicist and technologist whose postdoctoral work focused on quantum effects in biology and the origins of the building blocks of life in space. She is Head of Science for the Africa2Moon project at the Foundation for Space Development Africa, the continent’s first moon mission and the first lunar radio telescope of its kind. |

PRINCIPAL JOHANNA MOGANE: Leading with purpose |
She walks the same corridors she once did as a young girl. A proud alumna of the school she now leads, Principal Johanna Mogane has dedicated almost four decades of her life to uplifting others through education.
Appointed as the first female principal of Lindani Primary School in Mpumalanga, in 2017, Mogane’s leadership has been defined by compassion, courage, and conviction. She is a strong advocate of data-driven change, but her deep understanding of her students’ (and her community’s) challenges goes even further. When she noticed a troubling pattern of recurring absenteeism among female learners, she uncovered a heartbreaking truth: many were missing school during their menstrual cycles due to lack of access to sanitary pads. Determined to restore their dignity and keep them in class, Principal Mogane partnered with local businesses and past pupils to sponsor sanitary pads.
She also introduced a culture of contribution within the school; every teacher donates a pack each month. Today, her office has become a safe space where girls know they can find support, supplies, and a listening ear. Attendance has improved. Confidence has soared. And girls now know they are seen, heard, and valued. “I tell them: I started here in Sub-standard A, and now I’m your principal,” says Mogane. “You can lead too. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” |
