Managing Anxiety in Graduate SchoolTuesday, October 10th| 12PM - 1PM Location: Yuhaaviatam Center Join this session on effectively managing anxiety as a graduate student. This session is especially important for student leaders and mentors. Facilitated by Nirmala Gratton, LMFT and Psychotherapist, this session will explore What is anxiety and when to seek help, managing common issues faced by grad students: Imposter syndrome, Work-Life Balance and Burn out. Included in the session, there will be progressive muscle relaxation and a brief mindfulness exercise. Lunch will be provided. Drop-In Hours with the QRC Thursday, October 19th| 12 PM - 1 PM Location: SLDL House, 131 E. 10th Street Drop by the SLDL Office for informal counseling, questions, and feedback with QRC professional staff. Oaxacan Philharmonic Bands Concert Saturday, October 28th | 11AM - 1PM Location: Sontag Greek Theater (Pomona College) You are invited to enjoy a diverse musical performance of Oaxacan musical repertoire by two LA-based Zapotec philharmonic bands who were among the first to establish Oaxacan philharmonic bands in what is considered Oaxacalifornia, Indigenous communities/neighborhoods informally established across the Californian state by Oaxacan migrants. Free food for the first 100 guests! kin*dle October Event Día de Muertos - is celebrated on November 1st and November 2nd, when the spirits of the dead are believed to return home and spend time with their relatives and loved ones. SLDL will be hosting a special kin*dle event in honor of this important holiday. More details coming! What is kin*dle? A space for continuing students to develop community kin*dle actively acknowledges that our student body maintains multiple roles in their daily lives beyond CGU. It also recognizes that community building starts with and includes personal family and academic family. With this in mind, kin*dle seeks to create spaces and opportunities where continuing students can focus on developing a diverse and inclusive community. Fresh Check Day 2023 Wednesday, November 1st | 11:30AM - 1:30PM Location: Oasis Courtyard Save the date for Fresh Check Day! This event is a time for students to take a break, a breath and check in with themselves and check in with each other. A 7C International Mixer, we will feature DJ Big Mobile, and there will be a chance to win prizes! Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop Monday, October 16th | 12PM- 1PM Location: Zoom SLDL will host an Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students, especially those who are planning to apply for pre/post completion OPT during the current or upcoming semester. During the session, we will cover information on what OPT is, and the application process including eligibility rules, timeline and required documents for submission. 2C International Karaoke Hour Wednesday, October 25th| 4PM - 8PM Graduate International Students are invited to enjoy karaoke hour on-campus! This is a great way to unwind and have some fun while meeting new friends. Hold the evening for October 25, 2023! More details will be shared as we approach the date! Monthly SpotlightStudent SpotlightThis month we're highlighting Kenzie De Keyser, a third year PhD student of International Politics and Political Science at CGU. He also currently works as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Politics and Economics and as a Research Assistant for Dr. Tanu Kumar. During his free time, he volunteers as a senior editor for the newly created World Affairs Magazine, a club magazine founded by CGU students to publish analyses and allow CGU students to express their opinions on political happenings and research. Kenzie’s research primarily focuses on public housing; however, he also has a passion for the study of public transportation, infrastructure, and other development related areas. Ultimately, his goal is to create research that can help governments make better policy decisions in the future. Student Club SpotlightDoctorxHood DoctorxHood is a club that acts as a catalyst of positive change to foster a collaborative community for Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color (BIPOC) doctoral students in the School of Educational Studies (SES) at Claremont Graduate University. They're committed to offering opportunities for active networking as well as personal and professional growth. Membership is open to all current and alumni BIPOC SES doctoral students interested in enriching their academic journeys in solidarity with others while contributing to a more inclusive and equitable university space.
