Greenwich Square - London Erie Basin - Manchester AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Every year, Kawneer contributes to award-winning architecture - and this year is no exception. Façade Awards UK 2022 has shortlisted two projects where our glazing systems have been installed for the 'Best Use of a Curtain Walling Systems' category: Circle Square, a development in Manchester and Braywick Leisure Centre in Maidenhead. Circle Square features our AA®110 Curtain Wall system enhanced by our market-leading ‘Building Movement Joint’ technology. Maidenhead's iconic Braywick Leisure Centre showcases our AA®100 Curtain Wall, AA®720 Doors, AA®190 TB Entrance Doors and AA®3720 Folding/Sliding Doors. St Sidwell's Point Leisure Centre in Exeter is a project we are very proud of. The Passivhaus leisure centre is the first of its kind in the UK and features innovative aluminium glazing systems from Kawneer. As a result of the glazing systems, the project achieved 0.8 W/m2K and a 0.4 m3/h/m2 at 50 pascals air leakage. The project incorporates our AA®100 HI Capped Curtain Wall System and RT®82 HI Windows to achieve the high thermal performance required. Building performance is also improved with our AA®190 TB Doors, AA®720 Standard and AA®720 HI Doors, and AA®130 Brise Soleil. St Sidwell's Point Leisure Centre is shortlisted for 'Most Sustainable Building' at the Façade Awards UK 2022 and for 'Building Project of the Year' at the South West Constructing Excellence Awards 2022. Circle Square, Manchester Braywick Leisure Centre, Maidenhead St Sidwell's Point, Exeter PROTECTION AGAINST THE ELEMENTS WITH THE AA®3572 LIFT/SLIDE DOOR For projects requiring the highest level of thermal and weathering performance, the AA®3572 Lift/Slide Door is a perfect solution. With maximum panel sizes of up to 3m x 3m with maximum weights up to 400kg, the AA®3572 Lift/Slide Door can achieve large, uninterrupted areas of glazing and can easily accommodate triple and acoustic glazing up to 56mm. The AA®3572 Lift/Slide Door can achieve a Double Glazed U-value of 1.4 W/m2K and a Triple Glazed U-value of 0.83 W/m2K. In terms of weather performance, this product can achieve Class up to E1050 (1050 Pa) Water, Class 4 (600 Pa) Air and Class C3 (1200 Pa) Wind Resistance. Multiple door styles are available, such as single, double and triple tracks with up to six panes. A narrow frame profile and a low threshold achieve continuity between the inside and outside. The lift and slide system has stainless steel rollers to ensure smooth and effortless operation. The AA®3572 Lift/Slide Door is an ideal space-saving solution where safety is a concern and projecting swing doors are not desirable. Laura Parsons - Human Resources Manager Jason Wilson - Technical Services Manager Nigel Wood - Technical Support Engineer THE FOUR KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE GLENIGAN FORECAST Glenigan has published its highly respected insight report into the construction industry forecast for 2022-2024. This report analyses performance and growth by sector and vertical. Here is a summary of what is predicted: 1. Short-term growth stifled Construction will face challenging economic conditions. The war in Ukraine and post-COVID recovery will stifle growth in 2022 (-2%). Inflation spikes, higher taxes, and rising mortgage costs are expected to impact the housing, retail, and leisure sectors. There may be an 8% rise in 2023, followed by another 2% rise in 2024 as the UK economy stabilizes. Due to rising construction, material, and energy costs, this growth will be lower than previously predicted. 2. Depressed housing starts Increasing taxes, rising mortgage costs, and low confidence among homebuilders will lead to a decline in new-build activity in 2022. With household finances improving and UK economic prospects improving, a renewed build-for-sale recovery is expected in 2023 and 2024. There is a strong development pipeline for Build-to-Rent projects. 3. A few bright spots for non-residential work Accelerated online retail means warehouse and logistic starts will continue to grow. Discount supermarket chains are expected to drive a 6% uplift between 2022 and 2024. The number of office starts rebounded sharply last year (+27%), and the number is predicted to rise by 11% this year. As tenants and landlords adapt premises to accommodate changing working practices, refurbishment projects are on the rise. However, new office construction projects will be slower to recover. 4. Public Sector Pick-Up Public sector investment will be a driver for construction activity. Social housing starts are set to dip almost 10% this year but will rebound due to a strong pipeline of projects. The Government's intention to build 500 new schools in the next decade will drive growth in education construction (av. +8%). There is also a brighter outlook for the health sector. An increase in capital funding and a growing development pipeline means the value of starts will remain steady. A significant funding increase in the civils and infrastructure sector to address the maintenance backlog on local roads is helping to lift project starts. HS2, Thames Tideway, and Hinkley Point will support vertical activity. Stay subscribed to Kawneer Connect for future industry insights.
