Click here In the Mix - September 2024 HiIt’s hard to believe that three-quarters of the year have already flown by! With cooler weather settling in, it feels like autumn has arrived early. As we move into October, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what’s been a busy year and to prepare for the exciting months ahead. Recently, we had the pleasure of showcasing our work at the Sustainability-Focused Structural Concrete Alliance Industry Day at the Radisson Blu Edwardian in London. The event featured insightful presentations that gave us a deeper understanding of sustainability in construction practices, and how we can integrate them into our business. If you missed us there, don’t worry! Come visit us at the Highways UK Exhibition on the 16th and 17th of October at stand 325A. We’re excited to be part of this year’s event, which is the biggest and most important gathering in the highways industry. With over 375 exhibitors and more than 10,000 attendees expected, it’s an event you won’t want to miss. Check out the link below to book your tickets! NEW BEGINNINGSM180 BRIDGE RE-OPENS AFTER MAJOR REPAIR WORKS We recently had the pleasure of hosting our client, National Highways, to celebrate the successful completion of the M180 Mutton Lane Bridge project with an opening ceremony and ribbon cutting. Located in Beltoft, North Lincolnshire, the bridge had sustained significant damage, limiting its load capacity and causing disruptions to local traffic. As the Principal Contractor, CRL played a key role throughout the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process, working closely with the design team at Kier Group to develop a detailed methodology, project timeline, and cost estimates. Work began in January 2024, with the project involving extensive concrete repairs, a beam replacement during weekend closures, and the renewal of the parapet railings, bridge surfacing, waterproofing layers, and expansion joints. A huge thank you to our dedicated supply chain partners, fellow SDF lot providers, client representatives, and the CRL site team for their teamwork and commitment, which made this challenging project a success. It was heart-warming to see the joy on everyone's faces at the ceremony now that the bridge is fully open! We look forward to taking on our next challenge with National Highways. HIGHWAYS UK 16-17 OCTOBER 2024 With less than 2 weeks to go, don't forget to book your FREE passes to attend the HIGHWAYS UK Exhibition 2024 at The NEC, Birmingham! This year’s event brings together the people responsible for planning, developing, managing, maintaining, and future-proofing the nation's roads networks, and the exhibition covers every aspect of the highways supply chain, from cutting-edge materials to advanced asset management technologies, digital construction tools, and kerbside management solutions. CRL looks forward to connecting with industry partners, showcasing our capabilities, and discussing how we can contribute to maintaining our highways assets. Visit us at Stand 325A to meet the team and find out how we can help repair, refurbish & maintain your tunnels & bridges. REPAIRING THE PAST, PROTECTING THE FUTUREBERW ROAD BRIDGE At CRL, Mutton Lane Bridge was not the only accomplishment we celebrated this month. Our team also finally ( & successfully!) completed the restoration work on Berw Road Bridge (also known as the White Bridge) in Pontypridd, South Wales. This Grade II* listed bridge, built in 1907, was once the longest reinforced concrete arch in Britain, spanning 35 meters. Over the years, it had seen repairs and upgrades, but by 2018, it was clear that more extensive work was needed to ensure its continued use. CRL, in partnership with WSP, carried out a detailed structural survey of the bridge, revealing that a large portion of the protective gunite layer applied in the 1960s had begun to delaminate. After WSP’s structural assessment in 2020, it was determined that the bridge had a load rating of just 7.5 tons, prompting the need for immediate action. The project involved removing the damaged gunite, repairing the underlying concrete, installing galvanic anodes to prevent further corrosion, and applying new protective coatings. We also repaired and repainted the ornamental parapet railings and lamp posts, restoring the bridge's elegant appearance. Thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, this iconic bridge is now fully restored and reopened to the public, preserving its legacy for years to come. CRL PARTNERS WITH TUNLEY ENVIRONMENTALTo mark our commitment to the environment and the community, CRL has partnered with Tunley Environmental. As we enter a new financial year, this collaboration reinforces our dedication to building a sustainable future for all. Together, we will follow the measurement principles set out in BS EN ISO 14064-1 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for SERC reporting. This will enable us to accurately evaluate our current carbon footprint and develop a targeted carbon reduction plan. Aligned with the Institution of Civil Engineers' Carbon Project Initiative, CRL is also working toward achieving PAS2080 accreditation for carbon management in infrastructure. This partnership with Tunley Environmental empowers CRL to effect meaningful change in sustainability, underpinned by solid data and thorough assessments. We're excited to embark on this journey and make a lasting impact on both our industry and the communities we serve. CRL & YOUTHBUILD UKCRL recently hosted a successful Trade Skills Taster Day at its Mitcham facility, partnering with Fosroc, Vi Industrial Supplies, and YouthBuild UK. The event provided students from YouthBuild with hands-on experience in essential construction trade skills, including hand-placed repairs and resin injection. Participants enjoyed a tour of CRL’s facilities and learned about health and safety in construction from Nigel Roper (Our Senior H&S Advisor). Presentations by Steve Jones and Keysha Parker highlighted career opportunities and CRL’s training programs. This initiative strengthened CRL's commitment to nurturing young talent and marks the beginning of a fruitful partnership with YouthBuild UK. Special thanks to Fosroc and Vi Industrial Supplies for their support.
