Inside we take a closer look at local rainforests and wildlife, share waste and recycling guidance, and highlight environmental management work across the Port Macquarie Hastings region. We also have our regular plant and species spotlights, and we announce our World Rainforest Day book giveaway.

World Rainforest Day - Book Giveaway!

Pockets of rainforest can be found throughout the Port Macquarie Hastings region, but many of us walk past them without knowing much about the plants, animals and stories they contain.

With World Rainforest Day approaching on 22 June, we've rounded up some simple ways to explore and learn more about our local rainforests, from guided walks and audio tours to introducing a new practical plant identification guide, A Leaf-based Key to Rainforest Trees and Shrubs, written by local author Pieta Laing.

Set Yourself Up for Success this Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is just around the corner, and this year it begins with a global pledge attempt on 1st July.

Whether you want to avoid single-use coffee cups, swap plastic drink bottles for a reusable bottle, say no to cling wrap, or remember your reusable bags more often, a little preparation can make your pledge much easier to keep. Choose one practical swap, think about what might get in the way, and set yourself up before July begins. 

GPS Tracking Program to Improve Feral Deer Management

North Coast Local Land Services and Port Macquarie‑Hastings Council are partnering on a new GPS collaring program to better understand and manage feral deer across the region.

Tracking deer movements will help inform more targeted and coordinated management efforts. Community reporting also plays an important role in building local knowledge and supporting this work.

Tricky waste item of the month: Batteries

Batteries are a common household item that should never go in any bin. From loose AA batteries to embedded batteries hidden inside toys, tools and small electronics, batteries can spark or ignite during collection and processing, causing fires in trucks and waste facilities.

Threatened Species of the Month: Rufous Scrub-bird (Atrichornis rufescens)

Deep within the cool rainforests of eastern Australia lives one of the world’s oldest surviving songbird lineages - the elusive Rufous Scrub-bird. Found in isolated pockets of rainforest, including parts of the Comboyne Plateau, this shy and rarely seen bird is now listed as threatened, with fewer than 2,000 believed to remain in the wild. 

This month’s Threatened Species article explores the Rufous Scrub-bird’s unique rainforest habitat, the threats it faces, and how researchers are using DNA sequencing to help guide future conservation efforts.

Weed of the Month: 

At first glance, Groundsel bush may seem harmless, with its fluffy white flowers and ability to thrive in coastal landscapes. However, this invasive weed is capable of producing up to 1.5 million seeds per plant and can quickly spread through wetlands, pastures, roadsides and bushland.

Groundsel bush competes with pasture grasses, threatens sensitive native environments and can be difficult to control once established. Flowering throughout April and May, now is one of the easiest times to identify infestations.  If you think you have Groundsel bush on your property, contact Council's Biosecurity Officer for advice 

Native Plant of the Month: Coastal Banksia (Banksia integrifolia)

This month we're shining a spotlight on the Coastal Banksia, one of the Mid North Coast's most iconic native trees. With its striking yellow flower spikes, silvery-backed leaves and ability to thrive in harsh coastal conditions, the Coastal Banksia is much more than just a beautiful plant. Discover why it's a favourite of birds, bees and other wildlife, and how it can add habitat value and resilience to your own garden.

From its early beginnings to becoming Port Macquarie’s flagship community event, ArtWalk has grown into a celebration of creativity, connection, and culture. The countdown is on as we get ready to celebrate a decade of this much-loved event and this year is set to be BIG - one not to miss!

National Tree Day Community Planting Day

Join us on National Tree Day for a hands-on, family-friendly community planting event at Bunderra Reserve, Beechwood.

Council is partnering with Hastings Landcare to restore this important natural area, and we invite residents to be part of the effort. Together, we’ll plant more than 150 native trees and shrubs, along with 230 grasses, to support habitat regeneration and improve the health of the reserve.
