Queensland Road Safety Week 2022

Queensland Road Safety Week 2022

Road safety starts with all of us. You can’t control how others behave on the roads, but you can control your own behaviour.

As this year’s Queensland Road Safety Week ends, we wanted to provide you with some very simple ideas to remember so road safety is top of mind all the time.

Waving to say thanks
A simple action like the ‘thank you’ wave makes driving a lot more pleasant and safe for everyone. You’ll put others in a good mood and reduce the likelihood of erratic driving.

Sharing the road
No matter how you travel, sharing the road with other drivers is the way to go. On the road, as everywhere in life, a little courtesy to those around you goes a long way. The same applies to sharing the footpath.

Leaving a gap
Keeping a safe distance from the car in front is an important part of road safety. That’s two-seconds in ideal conditions. It’s at least four-seconds at night or in the rain.

Smiling at others
Smiling is a simple way that road safety can start with you. Studies show that it can put you in a positive mood and helps you drive more safely.

We’re encouraging you to contribute to safer roads by making safety a priority for you and your fellow road users. Remember, road safety starts with you every time you use the road – regardless of whether you're a driver, passenger, pedestrian, or you ride a bike, motorbike, or e-scooter.

Changing your water usage habits

Water usage habits stacking up your cost of living? Repairing minor water leaks can save from $20 to $200 in water usage charges per year.

Be sure to check your water meter regularly to monitor and understand how much water your household is using. This can help you identify water leaks and prevent water loss or damage.

How you can save water:

  • Take a shorter shower.
  • Install a water-efficient showerhead.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
  • Half fill the sink to rinse dishes or clean fruit and vegetables.
  • Only using your dishwasher or washing machine when they are full.

New alert service for disaster messaging

New alert service for disaster messaging

Want to be informed when emergencies or severe weather warning strikes? We have just launched Gold Coast Alerts, a new emergency notification messaging service. This aims to inform residents who register of potentially dangerous situations like flooding and bushfires in their local area.

Sign up by clicking the ‘Subscribe to Gold Coast Alerts’ button on the Disaster and Emergency Dashboard located here. Once subscribed, you will receive text messages and/or emails before, during and after severe weather events advising the type and level of threat along with recommended action.

Gold Coast Alerts is free-of-charge to subscribers. The service does not duplicate or replace official warnings provided by the Bureau of Meteorology or the State Disaster Coordination Centre.
