Dear Residents,

This year’s street tree planting programme is currently underway throughout the our local area with 140 new street trees scheduled be planted. Many of the trees will be replacing old street trees that have died in the last few years but the programme will also concentrate on improving urban canopy cover in areas that currently have low tree cover. There will be a concentration of new street trees along the Liverpool Road corridor with the intention of improving the amenity, air quality and experience of this busy road.

Council is currently undertaking community engagement to help shape our draft Urban Forest Strategy. Click here to submit your feedback and help shape a healthier, cooler, and greener Strathfield for the future.

Homebush Village Markets are set to return on Saturday 4 July from 9am - 2pm along The Crescent, just outside Homebush Train Station. This trial was made possible by the support of Community Bank Homebush and North Ryde (part of Bendigo Bank) and AMA Markets.

If you need to contact me or have any questions, please do so by emailing me cr.bcai@strathfield.nsw.gov.au or ring our office on 9748 9999.

Cr Benjamin Cai, Mayor of Strathfield

THROWBACK THURSDAY

The Crescent, Homebush, c.1916-1919. Courtesy State Library of NSW

The Crescent, Homebush

Homebush residents and railway commuters will recognise this image of The Crescent, largely unchanged from early days. Using Sands’ Directories and Trove it is possible to establish a rough date. On the far left is the former Homebush Post Office, built in 1895. Other signs advertise the Government Savings Bank, Palmer & McCreath (drapers), Richard Facer (estate agent), Cars for Hire from L.C. Hughes, S. Campbell (grocer & provision merchant) and Albert S. Ball (pharmacy) with J.M. Meldrum’s dental surgery upstairs. These brick shops were built c.1912. The photo must date from c.1916-1919 when all these businesses were in operation.
