Heilemann is a National Affairs Analyst for NBC and the co-host and executive producer of Showtime’s The Circus, a political documentary series that reports on significant American political issues. Wendy Lower Speaks On Restoring Humanity to Holocaust Victims Wilkinson College's Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education invited Dr. Wendy Lower to speak on her newest monograph, "The Ravine: A Family, A Photograph, A Holocaust Massacre Revealed." Lower said, "when we turn away from [atrocity images,] we promote ignorance...when we stop researching them, we cease to care about historical justice and the threat of genocide.” Prayers for FlintKaren Hampton recently spoke as part of the Engaging the World: Leading the Conversation on Environmental Justice series to examine the Flint water crisis. “Prayers for Flint” is her artwork reflecting upon the Black community of Flint, Michigan, who in the 2019 Flint water crisis discovered that the city’s water supply was contaminated with lead. Alum Mariana Samuda Publishes Debut BookMariana Samuda ('18, MFA Creative Writing) speaks about her newest publication, Five Places You Meet Fifteen-Year-Old You. Samuda's book confronts the teenage years and the fragility of memory. "In writing this story and doing all this self-reflection," said Samuda, "it made me realize just how much my younger selves had to teach me." Faculty Books: Dr. Martin Nakell on ConsciousnessIn Consciousness, his latest collection of poems, Dr. Martin Nakell (English) embraces the chaotic nature of experience in his writing. Dr. Nakell explores the incoherency of consciousness, and believes that there is a potential for poetic experience within all human engagement. Gift of the Month Over the past few years, Chapman University Board of Governors member Mark Hoover (’72), and his wife Donna Hoover, have generously made several sizable gifts to support Wilkinson College’s Fund for Academic Excellence and the MA War and Society Program within the Department of History. Their philanthropic acts have enabled programming for the Engaging the World: Leading the Conversation Series, viewed by hundreds over the past two academic years, and facilitated thesis research and conference travel by graduate students in the MA War and Society Program. Heinerth will share her experiences as a deep-sea diver and Explorer-in-Residence of The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, serving as the hands and eyes for a climatologists, archaeologists, and engineers worldwide. Tuesday, November 9 at 11:30 a.m. Attend the virtual "Environmental Justice: Making A Difference," hosted by Engaging the World: Leading the Conversation on Environmental Justice, and hear from Dr. Mathew Ballew (Psychology) Dr. Jason Douglas (Public Health), and Dr. Richelle Tanner (Environmental Science & Policy) as they discuss their research in environmental health and environmental justice. This discussion will be moderated by Dr. Georgiana Bostean (Environmental Science, Health, & Policy; Sociology). Dr. Glenn Kurtz, author of Three Minutes in Poland: Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Family Film will discuss the challenges of passing down historical memory to the next generation Homecoming is Coming! What makes Disneyland so successful in compelling people to comply with its culture at the ‘Happiest Place on Earth’? Focusing on the environment of Disneyland, Dr. Takaragawa examines how architecture, the environment and other mitigating social factors encourage certain types of behaviors & expectations. Escalette Permanent Art Collection Join Dr. Fiona Shen, Director of the Escalette Permanent Art Collection, as she leads a guided art tour through Roosevelt Hall, home of Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and Smith Hall. She is also the founder of Gente Market, a monthly open-air market and festival that provides space and resources for small business owners to grow their brands. Adam D. Martinez ('14, Dual MA English, MA Creative Writing) published his debut poetry collection, Remyth: A Postmodernist Ritual. Katie Peck's ('18, Art, Education Studies) recent artwork compares the landscape of her family's past with the climate crisis we face today. During her time at Chapman, she was awarded the Summer Undergrad Research Fellowship and created an eight-foot wave out of marine pollution collected from local beaches.
