Welcome Back, FoMD Students!

So, classes have started and I suspect you have stopped pinching yourselves that you were accepted into your programs. As Dr. Kunimoto said during orientation week, the hard work starts now. But, it's all worth it.

We all enter health professions for different reasons, but the outcomes and hopes are similar—to give back to our communities, as we work For the Public Good, (Au service de l’intérêt public), to contribute to the health and wellness of those we serve. I know you will have an amazing year.

Dr. Shirley Schipper, Vice-Dean, Education

Digital Anatomy Showcase hosted by Academic Technologies & U of A Libraries

On Wednesday, Sept 25, 2019 between 5 - 6:30 p.m., the FoMD Academic Technologies team and U of A Libraries will be presenting a Digital Anatomy Showcase in the Digital Scholarship Centre, on the 2nd Floor Cameron Library.

The showcase is open to all U of A Faculty members. The evening will provide access to many digital anatomy learning tools, including: Royalty-free images, 3-D atlas, interactive guides, independent learning activities, anatomy tables, 3-D functional anatomy, and VR dissections.

The showcase is recommended for anyone looking to help students and practitioners better learn and visualize anatomy in deeper ways. Feedback and level of interest will help shape future digital anatomy purchases at the University.

Meet our Director, Extended Reality (XR), Dr. Paul LaPointe!

XR is an umbrella term encapsulating virtual reality, augmented reality, 360-degree video, mixed reality and everything in between. Research has demonstrated that a one-hour traditional lecture can be condensed to a 10 minute VR experience, with a 10 per cent increase in recall, all while having fun. Dr. LaPointe began his appointment as Director on September 1, 2019, within the Academic Technologies portfolio. Please join us in welcoming him to this new and groundbreaking role!

IDEAS Office
Health Professions Education Scholarship Day
The Learning Journey: Student to Scholar

Thursday, December 5, 2019
Royal Glenora Conference Centre

The IDEAS Health Professions Education (HPE) Scholarship Day is a place for FoMD and other U of A health professional educators to locally share their scholarly work and scholarly teaching.  You are welcome to submit an abstract that you've already presented at a national or international conference if many of your FoMD colleagues may not have seen it presented before.  Likewise, we welcome new scholarly work (oral presentations and facilitated poster sessions) or curricular innovations for
which you do not yet have results (Great IDEAS).  We are trying an innovative method to share the stories of our HPE educators with stories from the educational trenches.  The Educators Lounge is a place to share innovative teaching that went really well or experiences where you tried something new and it went terribly wrong.  We want to hear your stores to learn, share, and compare.

Please join us December 5, 2019 to learn and share your scholarly work with your FoMD colleagues.

The conference goals are to:

  • Develop a collaborative network of health professions educators within the FoMD and beyond
  • Create a venue for sharing our HPE scholarship and scholarly teaching locally
  • Increase FoMD faculty, staff, and trainees; productivity and visibility in HPE scholarship

We welcome and encourage collaboration and the sharing of as much of your good work in HPE scholarship and examples of your scholarly teaching as possible; however, to ensure that as many people as possible have the chance to participate, you can only be a session presenter once.  You can be on multiple submissions, but just present once.

All presenters must register for the conference by October 11, 2019.

Abstract submissions close September 23, 2019.
Conference registration closes November 15, 2019.

For more information on how to register or submit an abstract, please visit the conference website at IDEAS HPE Scholarship Day.
