Term 2 Week 3

Junior School Notices

Term 2 Week 3

Dear valued member of the PLC community,

Junior School Tours and Year 6 Leadership

On behalf of all our staff, I would like to commend the Year 6 Leaders on their maturity, willingness to help, and leadership qualities when conducting our Community Tours. The girls speak so confidently and fondly about their school and can clearly articulate why PLC is such a special place. The feedback from our visitors is extremely positive and our wider community would be very proud.

    da Vinci Decathlon Competition

On Monday, 16 students from Years 5 and 6 competed in the annual da Vinci Decathlon competition at UWA. This event saw two teams of eight being challenged by complex problems in 10 disciplines. Both teams represented the College to the best of their ability, with the Year 6 team gaining first place in English, second place in Ideation, and third place in Art and Poetry. Well done to all students who participated and represented PLC. We were very proud of your efforts.

    Year 3 Maths Relay

On Wednesday, our Year 3 students were joined by our friends at Scotch College for the annual Maths Relay! Students worked in small teams to solve mathematical problems, while using their athleticism in the process. It was a fun and collaborative way for students to put their mathematical skills to the test.

Beach and River School –Term 2

Our Years 1 and 2 students enjoyed their first day out at Beach and River School for Term 2, last Friday.

After exploring the boundaries and discovering North, South, East and West, the girls took their journals and recorded their wonderings.

Some of their wonderings were so interesting to hear:

I wonder how many sea creatures there are in the sea.
I wonder what makes the waves.
    How is sand made?
Why does the dry sand collapse when you dig a hole?

One of the interesting learnings students have discovered at Beach and River School is how to speak crow. Last week, Year 2 students, Alyssa Seresti, Tali Van Den Broek, and Elizara Calderwood sat down with Principal, Ms Begbie, to pass on what they have learned.

The girls have had wonderful experiences and are looking forward to more upcoming Beach and River School adventures on Friday 19 May and Friday 23 June.

    Netball Season has Started

Welcome back to Term 2 and congratulations to all students who participated in their first week of Netball and MINKEY over the weekend. On Friday, five netball teams across Years 2 to 4 competed in what was, for some, their first ever game of Netball. We also had three Years 5 and 6 teams brave the wet and wild conditions on Saturday morning.

Our Years 1 to 4 MINKEY stars also braved the wild conditions on Saturday morning at College park, to complete their first game of MINKEY for the season.

Well done to everyone who participated; it was great to see the determination and enthusiasm on display.  Something everyone should be proud of!

    REN Reading Programme

At our last assembly we celebrated many students who are becoming avid readers through the REN Reading Programme. This accelerated reading approach encourages students to set targets and read novels on their specified level.

Well done on such incredible reading, girls. The Term 1 REN Reading Programme target achievers were:

Elise Alder, Charlotte Buchanan, Lotte Beccard, Greta Iannizzotto, Elora Hanley, Alexandra Lee, Tannah Ackerman, Audrey Barrett, Ruby Eden, Anaya Hapuarachchi, Millie Hunt, Clementine Kane, Sophia Khattak, Vivienne Nunn, Tallulah Nylander, Ishika Patel, Jessica Shen, Alisa Yang, Angelina Yuan, Clover Barrie, Jennifer Clemow, Ellie Gairns, Jolanta Griffin, Sascha Hardwick, Alyssa Lam, Sina-Marie Nair, Hanna Qin, Sofia Raja-Snijder, Sophie Rumpus, Anna Sekine, Nilia Seresti, Tikky Smith, Georgia Day, Saki Fukawa and Louise Komajda. We would also like to congratulate Alyssa Lam in 4C, who won the book voucher.

We are looking forward to more of our Years 5 and 6 students featuring in these top readers by the end of Term 2.

    Year 4 Shipwreck Museum

As an introduction to the Unit of Inquiry, Where We Are in Place and Time, our Year 4 students visited the Shipwreck Museum in Fremantle, where they joined the fleet of Willem de Vlamingh. They explored the coast of the ‘Southland’ in search for lost ships, prevented sailors from developing scurvy, collected natural specimens including quokkas and black swans, and left behind one of the most significant artefacts of early maritime history, the de Vlamingh plate.

Following the interactive experience, artefacts (including a real skeleton) were examined to piece together mysteries surrounding the events on The Batavia. Following their experiences, students are now well positioned to consider why people explored in the 17th and 18th centuries, and understand the impact of exploration and colonisation upon groups of people they encountered on their voyages.

    Sustainability Swap Shop

As part of the Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, Year 4 have been investigating the impact that technology has on the production of goods and services. With their investigations discovering how fast fashion impacts the world, they took action by creating their own Sustainability Swap Shop. Year 4 students collected clothes to be recycled in their shop which the Years 2 and 3 students were able to enjoy and reuse.

Following this, our slogan for the day is: Please don't shop when you can swap.

    Responsible Student Behaviour

Last week, we shared with parents our Responsible Student Behaviour Policies and Procedures via the PLC App and through Seesaw. We are continuously working with students to recognise and help prevent any inappropriate behaviour that occurs.

Mean moments, conflict, and bullying can be tough situations to navigate for children. Here are some strategies to help children overcome friendship challenges and find forgiveness:

    1. Encourage children to speak up: It's important for children to feel empowered to speak up if they feel they are being targeted. Encourage them to talk to a teacher or another trusted adult as soon as possible.
    2. Teach empathy: Conflict and bullying can stem from a lack of empathy, so it's important to teach children how to put themselves in other people's shoes. Help them understand the impact their words and actions can have on others.
    3. Practise forgiveness: Forgiveness can be a powerful tool in overcoming bullying. Encourage kids to try to understand why the bully is behaving the way they are, and to forgive them for their actions. This can help them move on and feel more empowered.
    4. Build self-confidence: Conflict can erode a child's self-confidence, so it's important to help them build it back up. Encourage them to pursue their interests and passions, and to surround themselves with supportive friends and family.

Remember, overcoming conflict or bullying takes time and effort, but it's possible with the right support and tools.

    Kind regards,

    Geraldine Drabble
    Head of Junior School

    Chaplain’s Reflections

At various points in our lives, no matter how long we have lived, there are moments that are like no other. Whether it is in some form of intellectual pursuit or spiritual encounter, something happens that changes us and sends us in a different direction. Yet between these relatively rare moments of enlightenment, we seem to meander from one life event to another.

We know that when we have gone through such an encounter, life takes on a different colour, as we realise that we view life and even ourselves, differently.
