This month's spotlight:

Emergency care in the context of COVID-19 pandemic

Emergency care is an essential system component for response to COVID-19 and maintenance of essential health services, including in the management of patients with pneumonia, sepsis, heart attack, or stroke, for example. Over the last 2 months, the WHO has supported countries in strengthening their emergency care systems through training, system assessments, and strategic planning.

In April, key stakeholders from 23 countries attended the first-ever Emergency Care Toolkit Train the Trainers event at the WHO Academy’s temporary training facility in Lyon. In Iraq and Liberia, WHO co-facilitated workshops to support the Ministries of Health and stakeholders to agree on priority actions identified in their Emergency Care System Assessments and develop roadmaps for their implementation. Most recently, several government agencies in Paraguay, including the Ministry of Health and the National Transit and Road Safety Agency, were supported to consolidate their road safety initiative with a focus on post-crash care.

Through these activities, WHO endeavours to facilitate the implementation of high priority tools and technical guidance to strengthen and improve emergency care globally. For more information, please contact Lee Wallis at wallisl@who.int.
