Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair As many of you may have heard at this year’s Hearts and Scholars event, Chancellor Khosla has recently launched the Chancellor’s Scholarship and Fellowship Challenge to expand support for UC San Diego students and strengthen the pipeline of future Triton changemakers. For Chancellor’s Associates, this provides an exciting opportunity to increase your impact on our scholars’ lives just as we begin to welcome our newly admitted Chancellor’s Associates Scholars to the campus community. A special announcement will be released shortly highlighting the incredible generosity of our Triton family and the special gift opportunities created through the Chancellor’s Challenge, so stay tuned for more information. With Triton Pride, Jerrilyn Malana ’86 Service, Pride & Inclusion March Colloquium Recording Thank you to everyone who attended our engaging March colloquium with Professor Marty Yanofsky. Hearts & Scholars Recording Thank you so much to all the Chancellor’s Associates that joined us for UC San Diego’s first-ever virtual Hearts & Scholars event! We were so pleased that everyone was able to come together for an evening of celebration to honor our scholars and donors. If you missed the program, you can catch a recording of the event here. CASP Alumni Story: Michelle Savage '20 Chancellor’s Associates Scholars continue to inspire aspiring learners even after they graduate, case in point is recent alumna Michelle (Shel) Savage ’20 who is now pursuing a master’s degree in Art History with John Cabot University in Rome. “I am a nontraditional student. I waited and raised my children before pursuing a degree, waitressing for many years before entering higher education. I went to a community college and then transferred to UC San Diego. Since I was a first-generation university student, receiving the Crankstart Foundation Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship was huge, as it paved the way for me to be able to further my studies and obtain a master’s degree today,” said Michelle. Through her master’s program, Michelle is taking hands-on courses in contemporary art, as well as learning about the ancient history of Rome, itself. She’s also active in student government, advocating for her fellow MA students and sharing with them what her new university and the city of Rome have to offer. Her goal is to eventually become a professor and share her passion for Italian culture and history with others. Read more about Michelle’s graduate school experience abroad, here. __________________________________ Virtual Events & Resources We strongly encourage you to engage with the myriad of events sponsored by our campus partners throughout the year. Every month we will highlight scheduled events from across UC San Diego that all Chancellor’s Associates are invited to attend. ArtPower: Premiere: c.a.t.a.m.o.n Dance Group Tuesday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m. PST Dancer Rand Zeid Taha and choreographer Elad Schechter of c.a.t.a.m.o.n Dance Group collaborate on a performance across borders. Performed live on stage in Jerusalem where both were born, Premiere “looks for a moment when everything will freeze and it will finally become possible to breathe.” The pair seek out how dance can become an international language which can bridge cultural differences and be used as a tangible tool for social change, particularly between their two religions. After the performance stay for a conversation with the dancer and choreographer live from Jerusalem. Buy tickets here. Neuroscience and Social Justice: How Separate Journeys Became One Wednesday, April 7 at 5:30 p.m. PST How does a kid from Compton, CA embark on a life-long journey and academic career path to Full Professor in Neurobiology? The answer is simple: access, mentorship and advocacy. Join the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology and Professor of Neurobiology Gentry Patrick, to hear his experiences as a first-generation college student doubting that he belonged, and the many emotions that colored his story, shaped his STEM- and self-identity as they developed and merged. Dr. Patrick’s access to education transformed his life. He turned his love of neuroscience into a mission of (re-)creating those opportunities for the next generations of underrepresented students from backgrounds like his. Research on creativity, innovation, and problem solving has repeatedly shown that diverse teams are more successful than those that remain restricted to a singular vision of “who” can be a scientist. Register for this webinar, to learn how we can create a scientific community representative of the community in which we all live, here. Holocaust Living History Workshop: “The Last Stage” by Wanda Jakubowska (1948) Film Screening with Marek Haltof Wednesday, April 14 at 5 p.m. PST “The Last Stage” (“Ostatni etap”), directed by the Polish Auschwitz survivor Wanda Jakubowska, is often referred to as the mother of all Holocaust films. Released in 1948, “The Last Stage” is a pioneering work filmed in situ and featuring former prisoners. Not only a stunning work of historical reconstruction, the film is also a radical experiment in feminist cinema. The screening is introduced by Marek Haltof, a professor at Northern Michigan University. Haltof has published widely on the cultural histories of Central European and Australian film. His book “Screening Auschwitz” has received the Wadclaw Lednicki Humanities Award from the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (PIASA). Register for this event here. Short Tales from the Mothership: 50th Anniversary Edition Tuesday, May 4 at 5 p.m. PST The Mothership is taking flight once again! This sci-fi microfiction event is inspired by sci-fi magazine editor George Hay. In the 1970s, Hay asked authors—including Arthur C. Clarke, the namesake of UC San Diego’s Clarke Center—to submit short stories that would fit on a postcard. Likewise, Short Tales from the Mothership invites participants to submit short stories inspired by UC San Diego’s iconic Geisel Library building, designed by much-admired architect William Pereira. Learn how to participate here. __________________________________ If you’d like to renew your Chancellor’s Associates gift online, click below. |
