Temporary Court Disruptions and Club Works Update

Hello East Malvern Tennis Club community,

Many of you will have noticed that the club is currently experiencing significant disruption as a result of the ongoing redevelopment works at the front of the clubhouse. While we were prepared for these renovations, we were not anticipating the recent fall of a light pole between Courts 7 and 8, which has added an unexpected layer of complexity – particularly for night competition and coaching.

As part of the broader development works, new drainage is also being installed alongside Court 4. As a result, Courts 4, 5 and 6 will be unavailable for approximately two-three weeks starting Tuesday 10 March.

What this means in the short term

  • We will need to borrow courts from neighbouring clubs for Night Competition, a process that has already begun and will increase over the coming weeks.
  • This is especially challenging on Tuesday nights, where competition demand is high across the region (including large sections at Blackburn and Waverley).
  • Scheduling will require flexibility, and we appreciate that this may be inconvenient. Court availability to members will be severely affected during peak times.

Looking ahead

While the current situation is frustrating, these works will ultimately deliver meaningful improvements to the club. We are optimistic about:

  • Improved lighting, with Council actively pursuing new lighting for Courts 7–10
  • Upgraded drainage, improving court reliability
  • New fencing as part of the completed works
  • Investigation into restoring the bore, which would provide long-term benefits to the club

As a Tuesday night player myself, I fully understand the impact this disruption has on your weekly tennis. I sincerely ask for your patience and perseverance as we work through the next few months.

I would also like to formally thank Sarah in the office, who is coordinating what has become a significant logistical challenge, along with Deb Bolic and Peter Car for their continued efforts behind the scenes.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support of the East Malvern Tennis Club.

Kind regards,
Ralph Muir-Morris
President
