Preparing Europe for a changing climate

"From wildfires to disastrous floods across southern Europe, the summer of 2023 will be remembered by extreme weather. How prepared are we for such events and their impacts? Relentless heatwaves affecting millions of Europeans across the continent, wildfires and flash floods impacting many communities call for even more ambitious action to prepare a new reality while speeding up the transition towards sustainability.

Year after year, we are surprised by the increasing severity of these events and saddened by the extent of the losses they cause. But these extreme weather events should not take us by surprise anymore. Unfortunately, we are living through a climate scenario that scientists have been warning us about for decades."

Leena Ylä-Mononen, EEA Executive Director

EEA looks into public exposure to Bisphenol A

"People in Europe are exposed to worryingly high concentrations of Bisphenol A. The briefing is based on measured concentrations of Bisphenol A in urine from 2,756 people from 11 European countries. At least 92 % of the participants had a concentration of Bisphenol A in their urine that exceeds the safe level. "

Interview with  Magnus Løfstedt, EEA expert on chemicals, environment and health.

ZeroWaste PIX — 2023 photo competition

The European Environment Agency (EEA) invites you to capture the unsustainable consumption and production patterns that threaten our well-being as well as the promising sustainable alternatives that are being explored.

Every year, the EEA organises a photo competition to raise awareness on an environmental theme and invites Europeans to share their takes on it. This year’s photo competition “ZeroWaste PIX” is a call to reflect on the way we produce and consume. Every photograph will raise awareness and inspire change, whether it is an image of factories spewing toxins, overflowing landfills, or a community garden bringing people together.

Submit your entries by 3 October 2023.
