Chancellor's Associates
Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair

David Buccigrossi Headshot

The start of a new year is an opportunity to deepen our connection to the things that bring us a sense of joy and pride. If you’re like me, empowering Chancellor’s Associates scholars is top of mind.

This year we hope to see you at Hearts & Scholars. The event, which will be held on February 23, is an opportunity to meet Chancellor’s Associates scholars, see the real world impact of your generosity in person, and connect with other donors. It’s also a chance to hear a CASP scholar and a CASP alumnus share how Chancellor’s Associates scholarships have transformed their UC San Diego experience and helped prepare them for the future. We look forward to honoring your generous support and celebrating distinguished students past and present.

This year and every year, your gift empowers the next generation of diverse thought leaders and makes a meaningful impact on our collective future. Happy new year and thank you for your commitment to Chancellor’s Associates.

Sincerely,

David E. Buccigrossi ’79, MD ’84

Alexandra Lombard ’23

Exploring Washington D.C.

I’m Alexandra Lombard, a senior Chancellor’s Associates scholar studying International Business. When I was asked to participate in a UC San Diego Campaign Celebration in Washington D.C., I was absolutely ecstatic. I knew it would be a fantastic opportunity to share my story with alumni, parents and friends. In fact, I was fortunate to attend an alumni luncheon with Chancellor’s Associates Council member Nina Bacas ’87.

Getting to be in a city that’s completely different than San Diego was amazing; I’m even considering a move to Washington D.C. after I graduate. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the celebration. I hope sharing my story inspired other students and encourages them to share their experience. I look forward to attending similar events as a UC San Diego alumna!

Special Announcements

In Case You Missed It: Chancellor’s Associates Event Photos

On December 1, our Chancellor’s Associates Colloquium, “The Hunt for the Next Earth,” was held at the UC San Diego Design and Innovation Building. Associate Professor Quinn Konopacky explored the exciting new planet discoveries that are advancing our quest to determine if we are alone in the universe.

Guests also heard from Cole Paquin ’23, a fourth-year Chancellor’s Associates Scholar who will receive his B.S. in biochemistry in June. Cole shared the impact the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship has made on his UC San Diego experience, giving him time to work as an undergraduate researcher and participate in the Muir Musical.

New Year, New Gift Strategies!

The Secure Act 2.0 was signed into law in December and includes changes that may affect your philanthropic planning.

New for QCDs in 2023:

· For donors over the age of 70 ½, a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) of up to $50,000 can now be used to create a charitable gift annuity (CGA) or a new charitable remainder trust (CRT) one time only, in one tax year. Other restrictions apply.

· Beginning in 2024, the annual limit for a QCD, currently $100,000, will be indexed for inflation.

· While required minimum distributions (RMDs) are now not required until age 73 for those not already taking them, QCDs can still be made starting at age 70 ½.

New Higher CGA Rates in 2023: The maximum payout rates for CGAs has increased by approximately .6%. These are the highest rates we’ve seen in years and tax deductions are higher too, making a CGA an even more attractive gift vehicle for those looking to receive guaranteed annual income and tax benefits during life.

About Chancellor’s Associates:

We believe in proactive philanthropy — the kind that breaks boundaries and levels the playing field for motivated learners. We are a community of supporters including alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends who partner with Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla to address UC San Diego’s most urgent priority: broadening access to higher education. Since 2013, more than 2,000 Chancellor’s Associates scholarships have been awarded to high-achieving, deserving students who are often the first in their families to attend college. Together, we change lives. Learn more at chancellorsassociates.ucsd.edu.
