Compensation Matters - May 2025 banner

Kaya reader,

On 28 April, we marked World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers’ Memorial Day, with CEO Chris White attending the Unions WA Workers' Memorial Day Service at Solidarity Park.

This is a day to remember those who have lost their lives at work and to acknowledge every worker's right to a safe and healthy workplace.

We understand it is a difficult time after losing a family member in a workplace accident. The value of having a safety net - workers compensation insurance – means workers and their families are looked after when they need to be.

We're committed to honouring and learning from the past and maximising our impact in the present as we look to the future. Learn more about the work we've been doing and what's coming up next below.

The Cost of Non-Compliance

In April 2025, a disability service provider employing 47 workers from October 2023 to February 2025 without a policy of workers compensation insurance was prosecuted and ordered to pay a fine of $90,000 and $14,469 in avoided premiums.

With a single workplace injury having the potential to cost in excess of $1M, the penalty reflects the seriousness of the offence.

We encourage all employers to proactively confirm their compliance with all legal obligations to protect their workers and their business.

Board Update

We are pleased to welcome Ms Rikki Hendon, Secretary of Unions WA, to the WorkCover WA Board.

Ms Hendon was formally appointed to the Board in April 2025 and provides a wealth of knowledge and experience in workers’ interests.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Mr Owen Whittle, former Secretary of Unions WA, whose term with the WorkCover WA Board concluded at the end of 2024. Mr Whittle served as a member of the Board from January 2014 and made significant impacts around workers’ interests and work health and safety matters.

Celebrating Youth Week

We're invested in the development of our staff and our scheme.

On 16 April, WorkCover WA's Mandi Mart (Youth Group) had the pleasure of hosting and networking with the GIO Workers Compensation Talent Academy to celebrate Youth Week.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the next generation of workers compensation practitioners and regulators to come together and share how they make an impact every single day.
