Thoughts on the Movement of Time: Winter Solstice Moving toward the winter solstice in our northern hemisphere here, then pulling away from this unfolding perihelion, bring heightened awareness of the importance of time as a causative factor. Easily we notice the changing light day to day, temperature fluctuations morning to evening and even changing moods moment to moment. Thoughts, feelings and emotions are very transitory, whereas our inner being seeks permanence, certainty and calm. Joy flies away when anxiety or cynicism come. This pandemic year requires us to stay put, look within for recalibration and invest going forward in our beloved priorities. Do you feel time stole opportunities in your life? Have circumstances stolen our ability to choose? Is there a perception that choice is limited? Has your energy been functioning under par? If so, let’s take a re-set with dedicating December to your holistic wellness. Let’s clarify intentions and options. If adaptation to change is a primary message of this pandemic, can we arise from the solstice with a revised plan for 2021, based on long-cherished priorities, completions and initiatives? Vata dosha teaches us how to bend to circumstances and thrive with freshness, how to be playful, adventuresome and light-hearted. Balanced Vata has faith in the unseen, imagined as benevolent. Balanced Vata expresses as ‘yukti’ or skillful faith in action. Mental health may be associated with repetitive positive thinking, not from rote as much as from developing a philosophy of life. Ayurveda expresses the Sankhya philosophy of Creation, enumerating her attributes in relation to the individual human journey of self-realization. Time is change and change needs time. Please extend unconditional love to yourself as your first responsibility and commitment, OK? Time multiplies the investment by itself. Eating at Home for Sustainability In 1986 I met one of my important teachers of Ayurveda, Dr. Thricovil Sukumaran from Kerala. Dr. Sukumaran was associated with the AryaVaidyaSala in Kottakal and became an important and beloved teacher of panchakarma in my life. Once in 1986 Dr. Robert Svoboda was coming to Vancouver, one stop along his wandering path of a new Ayurveda graduate, seeking his fortune. I invited Dr. Sukumaran to accompany us at an Indian restaurant after the event. I came to learn he had eaten only once away from home in his life of perhaps 38 years at the time. He was reluctant to accept at first, but did join with us and ate little, keeping his focus on the vibration of harmony at the table. We all felt the historic, subtle uplift and nourishment. Raised in the west. I was acculturalized to restaurants at a young age, mostly to develop ‘manners’ - which fork to use and when, how to dab the napkin, etc. Nothing to do with digestion, praise, assimilation, nourishment of life purpose or the grace of prana. Later eating with Dr. Sukumaran at his home were times of devotion, offerings, sanctity and fragrance. The sweetness of family, the care of detail, the refinement of experiencing one another together, these were new to me, and therefore so very poignant and healing. What is your value system around the intimacy and sacredness of mealtimes? How does Covid affect your relationship with food offerings? Any unexpected discoveries about the benefits of eating at home? To me, I find it suits my need to simplify daily life in pursuit of wholesomeness. I also notice the thrift of eating at home and appreciate knowing ithe meal is fresh. I find soups are variable, easy, digestible and quick to create. Eating at home helps me gauge 50% vegetable intake and inclusion of the six fundamental flavours required for good assimilation and elimination. Growing at home is the next logical step. Are you ready to take your own simple steps? The solstice is a powerful time of new beginnings, empowering new cycles and opportunities. May you, dear reader, take full advantage of 2021 while giving a lift to others as feasible and appropriate. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
