Remembering Mazina Giizhik (Murray Sinclair)

The College is saddened to hear of the passing of Mazina Giizhik (Murray Sinclair) at the age of 73. Mazina Giizhik was Anishinaabe of the Peguis First Nation.

In addition to being the first Indigenous Senator in the history of the Canadian senate and a renowned lawyer and judge in Manitoba, Mazina Giizhik is perhaps best remembered as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) from 2009 to 2015. His passing provides a great reminder of the importance of the TRC, and in particular its 94 Calls to Action.

2025 Dues collection is underway

Annual registration dues are now payable for 2025. All registrants will have received a dues notification through their email address listed in their portal profile. Look for information in College Connections, College Notices and on the website to learn more about dues payment.

Here are a few reminders to consider before paying your dues:

  1. Registrants must submit their 2024 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) statement in order to pay registrant dues for 2025. (Please note that you may enter additional CPD information up to midnight December 31, 2024 for the current year.)
  2. All those registrants who received a notification to take the Indigenous Awareness and the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct courses must do so in order to be able to pay the 2025 dues.
  3. The email address listed in a registrant’s portal profile is the only email address that the College will use for all email communications. Please ensure this address is up to date. If you want to change this email address, please log in here and change it. The College recommends using a personal email address for all College communications to ensure you do not miss important regulatory information.

A list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) related to the 2025 dues increase is available on the College’s website.

2025 Auditee selection coming soon

A new cycle of the Audit Program is set to begin on January 13, 2025, following the established practices from previous years.

Registrants are randomly selected each year for an audit of their continuing professional development (CPD) activities. Audits are randomly categorized into Level I or more comprehensive Level II assessments.

The Audit Program serves as a professional development tool to assess registrants’ compliance with legal obligations, while identifying areas for improvement in their practice, where warranted. This program is essential for helping the College fulfill its objective of protecting the public interest by ensuring that registrants uphold professional competencies and adhere to established standards and requirements.

Participation in the College’s Audit Program is mandatory for registrants of the College, consistent with the Professional Governance Act and Bylaws.

Additional information can be found on the College of Applied Biologists' website and within the Audit Program policy.

Regulatory Updates and Other Resource Information

If you are aware of a regulatory update or resource, please let us know. All contributors will be acknowledged.

Federal government launches Canada Water Agency
From the Government of Canada - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has launched its standalone agency for managing freshwater in Canada. The ministry was directed to develop what became the Canada Water Agency in 2019 and spent the subsequent years speaking to stakeholders and rightsholders. Starting in 2024, the Canada Water Agency will have $90 million in grants to disburse to freshwater management projects in Canada.

Questionnaire available on inventory of ecological databases and their vulnerability to being lost
The Ecological Data Sustainability Team is offering the opportunity to ensure data that is of value to registrants for assessing freshwater biodiversity and/or cumulative impacts becomes part of a national inventory that will also identify how at risk each dataset is of being lost.

By conducting this short survey, the team hopes to identify critical datasets that are of value, while acknowledging that this survey cannot effectively accommodate Indigenous knowledge systems and policy, or concerns on how this knowledge will be used. It’s possible that a separate engagement strategy will be designed to meet those needs and respect the Rights of the First Nations and other Indigenous People.

Respondents to the survey will be invited to a summary presentation and will receive a copy of the final report and personal information will be kept private.

BC Flood Strategy engagement written submissions open
From the Government of BC - The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) continues its engagement on its BC Flood Strategy by seeking written submissions in response to several plan guidance topics. Submissions are being accepted until December 20, 2024 at 4pm.

State of Canada’s Birds 2024 report released
From the Government of Canada – Birds Canada along with Environment and Climate Change Canada have released the State of Canada’s Birds 2024 report. The report provides accessible, scientific insight into the population status of 463 bird species that occur regularly in Canada

Funding for First Nations Guardians now managed by Indigenous-led national stewardship network
From the Government of Canada - The Executive Director of the First Nations National Guardians Network (NGN) will now manage an investment of up to $27.6 million to support 80 First Nations Guardians initiatives. This investment will support 18 new and 62 existing initiatives to safeguard the land, water, and wildlife within First Nation territories. The Indigenous Guardians initiative is an important pathway for Indigenous peoples to continue to exercise their rights and responsibilities in stewardship of their traditional lands.

Supporting habitat stewardship projects for species at risk across Canada

From the Government of Canada - The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, on behalf of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has announced up to $6.2 million in funding through the Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk. This funding will support 38 conservation projects across Canada, led by communities, individuals, and non-government organizations, to help recover species at risk in their local areas. The Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk plays an important role in the implementation of the Species at Risk Act through the conservation of species at risk.

Government of Canada and five Nations Sign Incremental Reconciliation Agreement on Fisheries Resources
From the Government of Canada - The Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard has joined the Ahousaht, Ehattesaht/Chinekint, Hesquiaht, Mowachaht/Muchalaht and Tla-o-qui-aht Nations (the five Nations) in announcing the signing of the Incremental Reconciliation Agreement for Fisheries Resources (IRAFR). This two-year funding agreement will provide a framework for a collaborative approach to governance, management and planning of the five Nations' fisheries resources. The agreement recognizes that the five Nations, through their respective Ha'wiih (hereditary leadership) and elected leadership, have a role in the management of fisheries in their territories.
