Free State officials are all fired up
and ready to go! |

They might be new to the national DDD Dashboard, but data-led decision-making is the norm for officials in this top-performing province. Use of the DDD Dashboard in the Free State is growing by the day, as more and more officials complete online and in-person training. Seen above are circuit managers and coordinators from Fezile Dabi Circuit and Thabo Mofutsanyane District, at training sessions last month. |

WHAT TO EXPECT: A QUICK LOOK INSIDE |
The Term 4 Promotion Predictions Report is available in the Reports section of the DDD Dashboard. It gives you the ability (from as early as the end of Term 1) to view the percentage of Grade R to 11 learners who are most likely to be promoted at the end of Term 4. Using the normal dashboard filters you can view the data from provincial to school level, as well as download the Excel file (including PI, if you have PI access). This means you can identify which learners are most at risk, and investigate why. It also gives you a useful way to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions from term to term.
How it works: The report uses machine learning to examine patterns in historical results, taking into account factors such as gender, grade, age vs grade, task completion percentage, task marks, exam test marks and report marks. In this way it learns which data best explains why learners succeed or struggle. Then it compares Term 1 info (or, depending on the time of year, Term 1 and 2) with these insights and predicts which learners are likely to pass. Important: The report only predicts overall Term 4 promotions, not promotion statuses, and not for individual subjects. It also excludes Grade 12s.
Try it out! Locate the Promotion Predictions report on the DDD Dashboard and click on the info (i) button for details of how it works and what it can (and can’t) do. Alternatively, read this summary of the key features. Then click on the webinar links (above, right) to book for a training session. |

GAME CHANGER: AMATHOLE WEST SHOWS HOW IT’S DONE |
Tucked in the farmlands of Bedford in the Eastern Cape, the story of Lonwabo Senior Secondary School is a lesson in data-led learning. So says Mr Ntsikelelo Cakata, Chief Education Specialist: Curriculum, for Amathole West District, who explains that the school has transformed its pass rate from about 20%, to 90% and upwards.
“Lonwabo’s principal uses the DDD Dashboard to see where he needs to intervene,” he says. “This is part of our ‘Know your Learner’ effort, in which principals are urged to use DDD to learn their pupils’ strengths and weaknesses. Today, Lonwabo is a top performer in the district. DDD has really changed the game for them.”
Mr Cakata adds that since using DDD, Amathole West has moved from being one of the worst-performing districts in the country, to being the most improved. “DDD is central to the work we do. All our interventions are based on the insight we get from the dashboard, and therefore speak to the specific needs of our schools and learners. Without DDD we would be shooting in the dark. We wouldn’t know where to begin.”
Watch this video to hear from other district officials around the country, who are using data to share (and change) their education stories. |
