Links eNewsletter - Term 2 Week 2

Dear valued member of the PLC community,

A Message From the Deputy Principal

This week I was struck by an article in the Harvard Business Review that discussed purpose. It prompted me to reflect on our purpose here at PLC, especially over the last two turbulent years. I realised that while the way we have done things has had to change, the why hasn’t. In fact, in many ways, the process of reimagining the logistics of events has reconnected us with the purpose of doing them.

Asking “how?” naturally led us to ask “why?” On the shifting ground of ever-changing regulations, our purpose of offering valuable opportunities and preparing every student to be personally successful in an evolving world was a strong and constant foundation. This is something I do not take for granted, and something I value greatly about our school. I have never been more mindful of gratitude than over the last two years and I would encourage everyone to practise gratitude this term and enjoy the things to come.

“Purpose can guide hard decisions”

Welcome Back to the Campus

We have greatly enjoyed having parents back on campus this week, and are keen to quickly re-establish these very important connections and build our relationships within and around our community.

With the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, many of our weekly routines will recommence. A Junior School Assembly will be held tomorrow, Friday 6 May. The Assembly will be held in the Junior School Swim and Recreation Centre commencing at 8.45 am and everyone is warmly invited to join us.

House Meetings for Years 1 – 6 will also resume tomorrow. Chapel for both Early Years and Years 2 – 6 will be conducted by Reverend Perera in the Chapel, and buddy classes will soon re-commence.

Junior School Year Group Meetings

Over the course of this week, our Principal Cate Begbie has led discussions around several topics in a series of Junior School Year Group Meetings. Thank you to the parents who attended and contributed so willingly and openly. A number of parents were unable to join us but do feel free to have a chat with me, or send an email should you have any suggestions or ideas about Junior School matters.

NAPLAN

The Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting the NAPLAN assessments (Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Mathematics) from Tuesday 10 May to Friday 20 May. Please ensure that you have read the communications from Mrs Katy Howes with regard to requirements for your child/ren. These tests provide us with useful data on areas for future focus when planning our teaching and learning programmes. We encourage families of children who are sitting these tests to view them as learning opportunities, and just a part of their otherwise normal day.

Current Year 6 Parent Tour

Our Admissions Team is arranging a tour of the Senior School with Cate Begbie for our current Year 6 parents so that you can learn more about what is on offer for your daughter in the Senior School when she makes the transition next year.

The dates of this event will be confirmed shortly and an invitation will be sent directly to parents in the coming weeks.

Gratitude in the Community

Our first weekend of Term 2 in the Boarding House was a huge success. On Friday night, the Year 11s loved their MYO pizza night with Julianne whilst the Year 12s enjoyed a nighttime cruise in the van with Ms Edwards.

On Saturday, the Years 7 and 8 students thoroughly enjoyed catching the train to Perth City for their shopping trip. In the evening, the Year 10s went to Pretzel in Fremantle with Maya whilst the Year 12s had a relaxing study break and enjoyed their MYO pizza night with Nat.

Sunday was a busy day, with the Year 7s embarking on their leg of Quay2Quay with Ms Edwards and Gussie, which included team-building activities, park visits, finishing at the beautiful Matilda Bay for pizza and a dip in the river. Also on Sunday, the Years 7 and 8 girls went shopping in Fremantle and all year groups had a wonderful time making the most beautiful Mother’s Day cards, including one for all the ‘housies’.

On many occasions in the past week, there has been a lot of gratitude expressed by the girls across all year groups, thanking the staff for all they do and the love and care they give the girls. Echoing this, the staff have been so proud of the resilience demonstrated by the girls this year and their enduring positivity and efforts to keep our Boarding House community safe and happy.
