Chancellor's Associates
Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair

David Buccigrossi Headshot

This academic year is one to celebrate. As we return to campus, the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program reaches its 10th anniversary.

It was impossible to envision how many exceptional things our scholars would accomplish for themselves and their communities at the program’s outset. Brian Do ’22, a Fulbright Research Scholar whose work will increase global access to vaccines for Hepatitis C patients, is just one example. Brian’s story, which is featured below, illustrates all that’s possible when remarkable students have access to the resources they need.

Now, we celebrate a decade of empowering talented, high-achieving students to reach for a bigger, brighter future. I hope you’ll join us at special milestone events throughout the year.

Sincerely,

David E. Buccigrossi ’79, MD ’84
Chair, Chancellor’s Associates

Meet Our Alumni

Brian Do ’22

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Brian Do ’22 had an eye opening as president of the UC San Diego Team Hepatitis B Club (Team HBV): the pandemic exposed natural barriers to vaccination that people face. In response, Brian initiated several community projects distributing food and hygiene supplies to the unhoused in downtown San Diego — a project that has continued for the last three years. He also led a successful vaccine clinic in partnership with the Social Assistance Program for Vietnam and UC San Diego Health, vaccinating more than 1,000 American Pacific Islander, refugee and immigrant community members.

Now, Brian is moving to Vietnam as a Fulbright Research Scholar, where he will conduct research within the local community to connect individuals with hepatitis to health care. His research will help catalyze other national governments to better link patients to vaccination and treatment around the globe. When he returns to the U.S. next summer, he plans to apply to medical school. Brian hopes that pursuing his medical degree and becoming a physician will allow him to continue giving back to the community that has done so much for him — a Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship not only allowed him to attend UC San Diego (his dream school), but also connected him with resources, like the Teaching + Learning Commons and CASP 101, that allowed him to succeed.

Leaving a Legacy and Providing Opportunities to Realize Dreams

As East Coast transplants who met during college in Boston, Tom and Carol Dillon have lived in San Diego for nearly 40 years. Drawn to the region because of Tom’s career leading science and engineering research organizations, it was through his last employer Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), founded by Bob Beyster, that they found their connection to UC San Diego.

Upon their arrival in San Diego, Tom met with UC San Diego’s then-chancellor Richard Atkinson. Almost immediately, Carol and Tom were drawn into the university, becoming engaged with the Jacobs School of Engineering and the School of Global Policy and Strategy. Through introductions from Betty Beyster, the couple began their affiliation with the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Institute, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Student-Run Free Clinic. But it was Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla’s establishment of the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars Program (CASP) in 2013 that drew them to support Chancellor’s Associates. In addition to annual gifts, the couple also funded an endowed scholarship and, more recently, made plans for a gift from their estate to further support the program, for which they’ll receive York Society recognition as well.

“We have always had a deep interest in access to college for economically disadvantaged students. Chancellor’s Associates’ emphasis on scholar success is unique and critical. Opportunities to meet CASP scholars face-to-face are always inspiring. We particularly appreciate the CASP induction events are beyond inspiring: We greet energized students who recently learned they have been selected for the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship — often with their proud parents, who are full of joy and anticipation for a bright future.”

As members of the Triton community, the Dillons hope that UC San Diego, under the dynamic leadership of Chancellor Khosla, continues its upward trajectory. “There’s such an exceptional commitment to student success, we hope that the university continues its outreach to the broad San Diego community with both research and industry endeavors, as well as cultural engagement. We feel strongly that Chancellor’s Associates will play a crucial role in realizing those aspirations.”

In Case You Missed It: Chancellor’s Associates Event Photos

More than 334 CASP scholars graduated in June, joining over 1,100 CASP Alumni. Together, they are a part of our Triton community of more than 234,000 alumni. On June 6, in celebration of CASP achievements, Executive Vice Chancellor Elizabeth H. Simmons hosted the annual CASPGrad event to recognize CASP scholars who completed their UC San Diego journey. The event was held in-person for the first time since 2019.

This year’s CASP 101 summer transition program for all new CASP scholarship recipients was held from July 24 – 28. Numerous CASP Peer Leaders shared their personal journeys and acknowledged the important role the program had on their campus experiences. Students participated in fun ice-breaker games and took campus tours. The incoming 2023 cohort includes 268 first year students and 87 transfer students, for a total of 355 new students. Triton Athletics: Recap from Italy

UC San Diego wrapped up Italy play with impressive efforts from both the women’s and men’s basketball teams.

Women’s Basketball put on a display of dominance in Milan, wrapping up their play with an impressive victory against Italy’s Basket Costa. The Tritons went 2-1 while playing in Italy, and head coach Heidi VanDerveer was impressed by her team’s tireless performance.

"I'm very excited about the progress our team made from game one to game three," said Coach VanDerveer. "We came out with a tremendous amount of energy tonight and we encouraged each other, and we really made a lot of 'effort' plays. The goal going in [to the trip] was to develop some kind of cohesiveness."

Men’s Basketball took on Germani Brescia, an opponent in Italy’s top Serie A division and wrapped up their play with a 2-1 record. In a rare trend being used more in exhibition games, head coach Eric Olen allowed assistant coach Tom Tankelewicz to coach the game for UC San Diego.

"First of all, I'm so appreciative of Coach Olen for giving me the opportunity to coach tonight; not a lot of Division I assistants would have that opportunity," Tankelewicz added. "The experience was pretty cool with a packed gym, raucous fans — that was a pretty memorable collegiate coaching debut, even though it was a scrimmage."
