Philanthropy Weekly No images? Click here Issue #326 | 6 May 2022 The Great Debate Impact investing has emerged in recent years as a powerful tool for social change. But where does it fit into the philanthropic eco-system? In this expanded Great Debate, we ask three wise voices to reflect on the question: does impact investing negate the need for philanthropy? The responses draw on varied examples and experiences that capture the enduring scope of philanthropy and how impact investing is part of the larger suite of tools available to those seeking to make a difference. It's a provocative question that triggers a stimulating debate. NEWSROOMREFLECTION: Opportunities for giving to grow and for philanthropy to lead. By Jack Heath, CEO, Philanthropy Australia At the heart of the welcome news that the nation’s philanthropy showed admirable resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, is the realisation that recent economic data points to a challenging period for giving in the immediate years ahead. Rising inflation and increasing interest rates represent difficulties that will impact everyone, from governments, to business, and households. In such an environment, governments become risk-averse: caution becomes a by-word of doing business in such a climate, especially for a government trying to manage a large deficit. But those circumstances represent an opportunity for philanthropy to show leadership, to step into the breach, and amplify its unique virtues – to take risks, to innovate, to collaborate and build connections that help shift perceptions and drive change. STORY: Working from home, on the challenges of alcohol detox Call it a realisation, perhaps an epiphany or even a flash of insight. Whatever words you choose, it happened for Pia Clinton-Tarestad and her life has not been the same since. Pia has more than two decades of experience in healthcare economics and was working in a big role with a global consulting firm when the moment arrived: she realised she had a problem with alcohol. As she remembers it, Pia was faced with that question thousands of others have tried to answer: what’s the reason for reducing – or even, giving up – drinking? Last year, the Barlow Impact Group decided to make a strategic focus on larger grants with maximum impact. The keystone of the new approach is a single $1,000,000 B.I.G. CHANGE grant. The recipient of this funding has recently been revealed as From The Heart, a campaign for the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a Voice to Parliament.
