Throwback Thursday Ashby-Z and the Reverend Soo Hoo Ten The unusually named Ashby-Z was built in 1916 for George Astle who was born near the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch in England. In 1921, Astle sold the house to Reverend George Soo Hoo Ten, Australia’s first Chinese Anglican minister who arrived in Sydney during the 1870s. He spent many years ministering to the market gardeners of Botany and the Chinese community in Surry Hills. In 1881, there were just 1321 Chinese residents of Sydney – mostly men. Soo Hoo Ten was known for ‘the kindness which he had always displayed towards the poor, the friendless, the sick, and the dying.’ Ashby-Z, 21 Broughton Road Homebush, 27 October 2021.
