Greetings from the Dean's Office!
Last week, we welcomed the class of 2026 (students and families) to the Wilkinson community! In this edition of We are Wilkinson, our new faculty members share their thoughts on joining the college, students relate details of their summer internship and research experiences, and we officially launch the fall 2023 Engaging the World (ETW): Leading the Conversation on Health Equity series of lectures, film series, art exhibits, and discussions. Of special note, the ETW keynote address by journalist Linda Villarosa (details below) on her book Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on Health in America will take place on September 26th at 7 p.m. in the Musco
Center.
All ETW events are open to the public!

Engaging the World: Leading the Conversation on Health Equity
Introducing Wilkinson's Newest Faculty
Every fall, the Voice of Wilkinson reaches out to the newest members of our community and asks them a few questions to get to know them a little better. We want to find out why they chose Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and what it means to be a part of the heart and soul of Chapman
University. Check out what they had to say.
From Our Eyes: The Reality of Life Within Japanese American Incarceration Camps
Alumnus and current staff member Christian Grevin (Political Science and History ‘22) reflects on Dr. Stephanie Takaragawa’s (Sociology) recently installed Images and Imaginings of Internment: Comics and Illustrations of Camp exhibition, which examines the little-known visual representations of daily life within internment camps where Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants were incarcerated during World War II.
Career Corner:
Making a Difference
with an Internship In spring 2023, Wilkinson College invited alum Derrell Roberts (Social Sciences ’81) back to Chapman to talk to students about internship possibilities at his Sacramento-based foundation, the Roberts Family Development Center (RFDC), which hosts a Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School each summer. The foundation hired three Wilkinson students as interns for the summer. Career Manager, Erin Berthon sat down with one of those lucky students to talk about her
experience.
Surf Students Share Their Research Experiences
Vivianna Juarez (Art and Philosophy; English minor ‘24) and Rhyan Warmerdam (English; Psychology and Secondary Education minors ‘24) offer insight into their experiences conducting research as part of Chapman’s 2023 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), an on-campus eight-week summer program that gives undergrads experience in hands-on research and creative scholarship mentored by expert faculty.
