DELWP Visit On Wednesday 1 December, a delegation from the Department of Environment, Land Water & Planning (DELWP) visited the resort. The purpose of their visit was to see how the resort operates, the work being done and challenges the environment poses. The group were engaged in discussions with senior management about current priority projects, developments and green season operations. A resort tour opened their eyes to the breadth and depth of activities undertaken behind the scenes. This included looking at current and future infrastructure projects as well as essential services infrastructure of hard waste, water, gas and sewerage treatment. The DELWP group will visit each of the alpine resorts to develop their understanding of resort management activities and to be better informed for the development of Alpine Resorts Victoria. Members of the delegation commented that it had been an extremely worthwhile visit and provided a far more comprehensive picture of the work undertaken by resort management boards. New! Mt Hotham Flora Booklet Mt Hotham Resort Management is pleased to launch the first and only Mt Hotham Flora Guide, a comprehensive guide to the unique indigenous flowering plants that you can find within the resort. The Mt Hotham Flora Guide was prepared by the Resort Management's Environment team and is the perfect way to identify the many beautiful flowers you find as you hike Mt Hotham's fabulous tracks and trails. The guide also provides information about the mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs that rely on the local flora for food and habitat. You can download the Mt Hotham Flora Guide using the button below or buy a printed copy from the Mt Hotham Resort Management Office in early 2022. All proceeds from the printed guide will be used on revegetation projects in the resort, at the two Mountain Pygmy-possum (MPP) tunnels, focussing on plants that provide food for the MPPs. Remember: Take only photos, leave only footprints. Our alpine environment is very sensitive and the flora and fauna are protected - you are not permitted to remove any plant material, and we ask that you take out everything you bring into the area. Great Alpine Road Rehab explained If you’ve driven up to Hotham from Harrietville lately, you could not have missed the major works being done on the Great Alpine Road by Regional Roads Victoria. While it’s a bit annoying to have to wait for the lights to change at the worksites, it might help to know that the work is a huge investment by Regional Roads Victoria to ensure safe access to Mt Hotham – and it’s providing local jobs as well. Funded by the Department of Transport’s Building Works Program, the work is all about stabilising the foundations of the road, which in many sections was built over a foundation of poorly prepared ground (sometimes just bulldozed trees and earth). Over time, the organic components under the road have rotted and water has found its way in, resulting in instability and creating the risk of landslips. The work currently under way is reconstructing the road foundations, ensuring effective drainage, and therefore ensuring stability of the road long into the future. Protecting the environment at Christmas Whether you’re on the mountain for Christmas or down in the valleys, there’s lots of ways you can make your Christmas more environmentally friendly. Think about ethical and locally made gifts, repurposing and reusing such as wrapping presents in fabric instead of paper, and zero-waste decorations. Instead of buying plastic based decorations, consider buying biodegradable or even better making your own. From dried citrus and cinnamon stick garlands to paper decorations made from newspapers or toilet rolls there’s lots of creative ways you can style your Christmas green! Making your own decorations is a fun activity to do with the kids and guess what it’s even fun for us adults. Get creative this Christmas and help us all work towards a greener, cleaner future.
